the one with the jello conversation.

25 August 2011

*warning: if you love jello, run away & never look back at this post.*

the one with the jello conversation

so let me start by setting the scene...
it's tuesday night. it's like 10pm.
we're sitting at this lovely farmhouse dinner table and everything is all gravy.
{we = me, jennifer, julie & rita.}

we're talking about quilts.
we're talking about family.
and then we started talking about food.

yeah we should've just stopped while we was ahead.
but NO. no we didn't.

*insert the jello conversation*
i'm not even entirely sure how we started talking about jello.
and honestly i think that once i found out the truth...i was in complete shock.

they proceed to tell me that jello is made from...hooves.
yep. real freaking hooves.
like from real pigs & real cows.
and not just their hooves but also their intestines.

i'm sitting there and all i can say is "shut the front door."
i'm literally reliving all the times i horked down some jello.
i'm talking throwing down some mad amounts of hooves in my day.

of course i don't believe it.
but NO someone {aka julie} says "google it!!!"
and so we google it WHILE rita grabs a box a jello from the kitchen.
bad idea. again.

let me just say that bill cosby is SO not on my favorite list of people right now.
shame on you bill cosby.
everything is SO not "OBKB" with this.

also keep in mind that i'm in the southern part of ohio.
i'm totally & completely kid free and without the hubby.

AND to top it ALL off.
i'm headed home last night and i'm not even kidding when i say that this...
my hubby says, and i quote, "the kids made you some sugar cookies & JELLO while you were gone."

what the heck?!?!
of course my kids made jello.
we haven't eaten jello in months BUT MY KIDS MADE ME JELLO!!!

yeah.
this is a true story.

and i'd like to say that no animals were harmed in that making of this blog post...
BUT i have a whole freaking bowl of hooves in my fridge as we speak.

epic fail.

That's too funny! Why do you think gelatin is so good for your fingernails?

I love jello with mandarin oranges in it!

Might be what it's made of, but I grew up in Leroy, NY, where Jello was first made. There's a jello museum and my kids have jello shirts (just made some for my kid with a sore throat). Hubby and I don't eat it. I may have consumed a jello shot or two in college (and after).

Pudding or jiggly jello?

Either way, today I've learned that hooves are delicious! lol

Lol, this is one of those thinkgs that I knew but managed to forget until reading these post! And the family holiday season is rapidly approaching....oh no!

Carolyn said...

EWWWWW! I've horked down my share of hooves in my day, too. I'll never look at the stuff in the same light again, thankyouverymuch! LOL EWWWW Just thinking where all those hooves have been. No way could they get them totally clean. Grossectify!

Debbie said...

Wow, I seriously didn't believe you, so I googled it. Yup, it's true! I'm going to try to forget that I know this!!

M-R Charbonneau said...

You post was freaking hilarious! If this freaks you out, don't look at the ingredients for most yogourts (gelatine too!). :) good luck with that bowl full o' jello!

Maxwells said...

I normally don't comment. But this was so funny!!!

Osage Bluff Quilter said...

Yep, I already knew that. and yes I still eat the stuff, especially if it is mixed fruit or raspberry flavored.

Now my hubby insist on telling me everytime what it is made of.

He won't touch the stuff with a ten foot pole. But then me makes head cheese, using pigs feet and ears. It jels the exact same way only with cold chunks of peppered meat in it. Totally GROSS!

Patti
PS It's good for your fingernails!! LOL

OMG that is so funny. I learned this secret from my grandmother long ago. But you don't just have hooves in your fridge... you have FRUIT flavored hooves!

The hooves and intestines are what gives Jello it's protein. Grody, yes.

Loved your line about having a whole bowl of hooves in the fridge.

I have half a bowl of hooves.

*Note to self...look for vegan Jello alternatives.

Sarah Craig said...

I laughed 'til I cried when I read this post - I can't believe you didn't know that already! I still love Jello - but I have to admit a family secret - my mom invented turkey jello as a way to use up Thanksgiving leftovers. Clear turkey flavored gelatin with chunks of turkey, celery and onion floating in it! Now if that won't turn you off Jello, nothing will!!

Melody said...

Oh go d how funny! Actually I'd managed to forget about that until I read this. Sounds like you guys had a wonderful time.

Karen said...

I LOVED your story... you made my evening!... too funny...

Rebecca Lynne said...

Hahahahaa! I can't believe you just found that out! It is gross, yes, but then again if you really sit down and think about everything your eating...well let's just not go there.

You'll forget about it. Eventually... Ha! {coming from someone who hasn't had jello...oh wow...in decades!}

Anne said...

I would have LOVED to be there and hear this for myself! 2 funny!

Krista said...

he he. Well, I still love it. Hooves and all! I also love hot dogs (so much, that I still snuck corn dogs in my 8 years or so of being a vegetarian!!!).

Rhonda the Rambler said...

I knew there was a reason I hated Jello!!

Taya@TypeB said...

Hilarious post! What's worse is that a lot of gummy candy and marshmallows are also made with... hooves :( I just pretend like they aren't. Ignorance is bliss!

Jenn at The Little Shop of Stitches said...

Ah ha ha ha ha...My sides hurt! So funny! Totally gross...but so funny!

4dreamsr said...

Well wasn't quite sure, but always thought it was made outta some natural ingredients. NOW I know HOW natural!

Erin Marie said...

I think that piece of info was in my head somewhere. Thanks for unearthing it again.

I didn't google it, but I did check Snopes.com Good news: It's not made of hooves. They "do not contain the necessary collagen". JELL-O IS, however, made from bones and hides. :-)

I think I have heard that before, but it was so long ago that I had forgotten about it. Eeeew!

Yep, it is NOT kosher.
Do you know what bologna is made from?

harleywife57/ Mickey White said...

well , that's gross ; jello is not one of my favorites - now , will I ever have it again ? I do like instant pudding ; do you know what's in that ? probably something just as gross ! maybe the milk makes the bad stuff dissolve ????

Pinky said...

:) I see that someone has already mentioned what I was going to say- they don't use hooves in it any more - bones etc yes, but not hooves! :) There is also an interesting suggestion that by the time they have finished processing the original products, that it is so far removed from the original that it's no longer considered a meat product!

suemac said...

I was just getting ready to make some jello. Makes you think.

Anna said...

dont fret, there are alternatives to gelatin!!
The most common one is agar, which comes from seaweed, but there are a bunch of other ones also.
Oddly, where i used to find jelly crystals made with agar is ethnic stores, as the stuff that comes from places in south-east asia is often vegetarian. Label reading is required though.
the only thing is, it sets much more solidly, less wibbly-wobbly.

hope this helps

Ann Marie @ 16 Muddy Feet said...

I will continue to eat my orange flavored jello with mandarin oranges in it. There are many more things out there that are a lot more gross than wonderful tasting jello. Some that were mentioned above.....head cheese, hot dogs ( do you really know what is in those ?) bologna, now I can't stand that, never have been able to. Then there are those things called Twinkies, that have a shelf life for like 100 years or something.

Wacky Woman said...

Ain't no big deal. I eat Menudo. And, I know what is in it. And, I still eat it. And, I love it.

MWalker said...

Love Jell-O. If you read the "Little House on the Prairie" books, you'll catch several references to boiling bits of animals to get the gelatin out of their bones to set certain foods. If you eat meat, you are eating their muscles, so why not some bone-jelly too, LOL.

Lilac Barries said...

I KNEW there was reason I hated Jello, thank you now I have a legit reason

Lilac Barries said...

and I just remembered the first time I met my husbands grandmother. We went to her house for lunch and she served this jello concoction with orange jello, mandarin oranges and cottage cheese. being the nice polite girl that I am I choked half of that down. *shudders*

Mary on Lake Pulaski said...

I'll just keep passing the jello around the table without taking any..thank you, but NO THANK YOU!!

Katy said...

Well...that's two things I've had to give up because of something someone put into my head and I could not get past it. LOL
The first being Gatorade. While out boating one hot summer my best friends husband watched me down half a bottle of blue gatorade because I was so hot and while I was still swallowing it he mentioned how good it was for the body because it's like drinking sweat. That did it for me.

Wendy said...

Yep, completely true. Gelatine is made from horses hooves. Gelatine is found in a LOT of items including soap, jelly sweets like Haribo and your beloved Jello. My brother is a very strict vegetarian and wont touch anything with gelatine in. Did you know that cheese is made with calves' stomachs? Should I stop??

Thearica said...

The jello was always my favorite part of being in the hospital! They make it so good and thick!

Marie said...

I live not far from where they make Jello. The Jello plant is located less than half an hour from a race corse (think horse hooves), I kid. you. not. We grew up with that story and with eating Jello! Welcome to my world;-)

Quilter Raised in the South said...

I found out when my hubby developed an egg allergy and I had to find substitutes, one of which is gelatin. there is no perfect food, except maybe chocolate! (guess what, not perfect either)

Jennie @ Porch Swing Quilts said...

Meh, doesn't bother me. It's just the collagen from the bones and hooves. And pudding doesn't have to have gelatin in it.
You did make me laugh though. Thanks for that! Thanksgiving wouldn't be the same at our house without my mom's triple orange Jell-o.

I'm so glad I don't like jello, other than some jello shots I don't eat it. Does it actually say that on the box? I can't wait to go to the store and see what's listed as ingredients.

Michele said...

You crack me up. My mom, a horse lover, told me about the hooves in jello when I was little. I still ate it, but it sure gets you thinking. I guess horse tartare isn't going to fly...

Pieces to Love said...

Is now not the time to mention that marshmallow's are made with the same gelatin? I have several vegan friends that I have learned things from. I will still eat marshmallow and jello, but I won't touch bologna after seeing it made as a teenager.

Mini said...

i grew up near the jello plant in Woburn, MA... you always knew when it was grape day--- you could smell it.

You never knew where gelatin came from? ALL gelatin. and, if you are going the vegan route: agar is made from seaweed. It's also what they grow bacteria on in laboratories. it's a standard growth media. Yup... food science is not always pretty, but in current times think of it like those trendy "farm to table dinners" where the trendy celebrity chef goes "tail to snout" for the meal :)

Alice in WV said...

Rachel dear, that's why your fingernails get nice and strong when you eat a lot of Jello.

Colleen said...

This made me laugh. My parents told us when we were kids and I *loved* running around telling all the other little kids what I knew about their Jell-O.

It wasn't nearly as good as my father's "trip to the hot dog factory" story, tho.

PNW Quilts said...

too funny! and the hospitals always give you jello~what's that all about!!
but my daughter loves this marshmellow~jello~pineapple (and other stuff) dessert i make now, too find out marshmellows have the same stuff, i don't know if i should tell her and ruin her holiday dessert~my oh my!!

Melody said...

Welcome to the wonderful world of animal by-products. I for one appreciate the fact that the whole animal is used in one way or another. I was raised on a ranch and still own cattle today. Just FYI- it is against the law to slaughter horses in the US, so the gelatin these days comes from cattle.

Outlaw said...

I've known this for years, but hey, I guess I've chosen to ignore that little fact. Cause when I'm sick - I want my strawberry jello. thanks for the reminder of what I'm really craving when sick. I'll think twice next time.

jetvic said...

I so needed to laugh!

Thank you!

Elsa said...

pretty awful isn't it ~ also any capsules that are two pieces together ~ they're made from the same stuff as jello.
I've been a Vegan for a while now and you'd be surprised at all the stuff gelatin is in ~ UCK.

yeah my husband hasn't been able to eat "TRIGGER" ... you know Roy Rogers horse .... for quite a while now! makes him think of him every time jello is served. This so makes me laugh! life is fun isn't it. sorry to say but in this life there will be jello! we just try not to focus on where it comes from. :)

happy trails :) to you until we meet again....la la la

OMG, I can't stop laughing! Great post, Rachel! Don't get me wrong, I know the thing about the "real freaking hooves" is true, it's just the way you tell the story!!

Melinda said...

I knew this, and try to tell my kids, but they don't believe me. They think I'm messing with them. One day when they're adults they'll have the jell-o conversation themselves.

I found out when I was baking for a friend who is a vegetarian and she said she couldn't eat marshmallows because they are made with gelatin and that it's made with horse hooves.

I still love jello.

I have known jello is made from hooves since I was a kid...i still love it.

veronajb said...

Hmm, being vegetarian I can say 'what's the fuss?' I eat vegetarian jelly (from seaweed products. But surely if you are eating the rest of the animal, why care what which bit is in your jello. :-) And hopefully you won't start researching what is setting your cheeses........

Celeste Creates said...

I love it! How you made me laugh. I like a lot of Cool-Whip on my hooves. What's that made of?

justacraftymother said...

OMG!!!OMG!!! that is so grouse! i will never be able to do a jello shot again! lol

Kelly O. said...

At least it's all natural and not made with chemicals :)

kait. said...

Hahaha, I could see that being a very jarring discovery! The very rare occasions I make gelatin, I use a seaweed-made substance called Agar that you dissolve in any kind of juice you want and it gels it up (without needing to be refrigerated, which is great if you have to travel with it somewhere). It's delicious and guilt free!

Kimberly said...

Ha! All I know is that jello tastes exactly the same going down as coming up since I was overfed it whenever I had the flu as a kid. So I guess I'm safe... I still haven't gotten over it and so haven't eated the stuff in years!

(Maybe I shouldd thank my mom??)

LOL! Great story! I knew about jello...we're ranchers. Love jello, but have a hard time eating hotdogs. LOL. Don't google that. So, did you eat the jello the kids made you? Grin.

Josie McRazie said...

I did know this, my daighter is a vegetarian and you would be surprised at not only what is in some foods, but what foods also use gelatine in them, including marshmallows, jell candies (like gummy worms) and even some yogurt! But these things are also in our cosmetics! Ever used foundation on your face?? My daughter had to start being more aware when she baught the stuff she likes to LAYER on her face!!!

KatieQ said...

Sometimes truth really is stranger than fiction. I learned the truth about gelatin based items when my daughter became a vegetarian. I assumed that if dairy items were Kosher they would be okay for vegetarians (Kosher products can't mix dairy with meat). It turns out that there is a loop hole. Since the process that makes gelatin is so far removed from the actual meat, it can still be considered Kosher. That was the end of her favorite Yoplait lite chocolate mousse yogurt. It's a lot harder being a vegetarian than it sounds, especially if your kid doesn't like vegetables. I haven't worked up the nerve to tell her about rennet in cheese.

Tegan said...

My husband and I are vegetarian and giving up gelatin has been a killer for me! I loooove gummy lollies and it's crazy the amount of products that have gelatin in them!

It's the rennet in cheese that REALLY grosses me out though! Enzymes from calf guts... ICK! Thank god you can get non-animal rennet though! I don't wanna give up cheese too! :-P

Alyssa Grace said...

Oh yes! Gelatin is in most candies. Also, lipstick has fish scales in it, chocolate has bugs in it, and mascara has bat poop in it!

Christine said...

rachel, been reading and LOVING your blog for awhile now. was im-ing with my hubby the other day and told him he had to read the jello convo. he was laughing so hard at his desk that his boss leaned over his shoulder to read it, too. thanks for giving us a horrible reason to laugh. (p.s. this reminds me of an old simpson's episode...the geezer, Mr. Burns said, "they're made with hoooooves, you know?!?")

I knew I should have stopped reading when you told me to.

Unbelievably funny...thanks for sharing.

April Mae said...

Not that I want to ruine your life but also keep in mind that Gelatin can be found in all sorts of foods like some of these....

•gummy bears
•sour cream
•cream cheese
•cake icing and frosting
•marshmallows
•soups, sauces and gravies
•canned ham and chicken
•corned beef
•sausage

It really sucks when you learn the truth about the foods that you really love.

Sorry. :(

Marci Girl said...

Yep, that is why vegetarians won't eat it, and why they avoid any products made with gelatin. Learned this years ago from a real deal vegan. Horse hooves too.

Wendy P said...

Everyone has pretty much covered this! Relax! Think of all the hot dogs and sausages that you have eaten in your life. I'd rather eat hooves than "everything but the oink." And how about the FDA's standards for food? "Bug parts per million" and the amount of microbes, pesticides, hair, etc that is acceptable?? Like I said, I'll take Jello rather than a lot of other options out there!

Lei Lei said...

Yeah sorry, gelatine is from hooves, we found out here (London UK) when the mad cow scare was on. It was amazing the thing made from parts of cow which came off the shelves!
