17 June 2011

synchronized squares quilt along.

welcome to the preparing part of the synchronized squares quilt along yall :)

synchronized squares quilt along: preparing

first things first...
we need to trim all your PRINT layer cake squares down.
your squares will need to be 7 1/2" x 7 1/2"
*do not discard those lovely leftover 2 1/2" strips though*

synchronized squares quilt along: preparing

now we need to trim all your SOLID layer cake squares down.
your squares will need to be perfect 10" x 10" squares.

my synchronized squares quilt.

now's the perfect time to make our binding. <--no groaning!!! :D
if you want a scrappy binding, simply use the discarded 2 1/2" strips from above.
if you want regular binding, simply use 3/4 yards of matching fabric.

now trim those blocks & make that binding.
& we'll meet back up next week.

i can't wait to start seeing yall's pics show up in the flickr pool.
fyi: the flickr pool includes a q&a section for those with lingering questions.

Hello!! I am doing this as a stash buster. I have no more room to add more fabric, so I'm trying to use up what I have in order to make room for a shopping spree. lol How many 7-1/2" squares of the print and 10" squares of the solid do we need to end up with? Thank you so much for another AWESEOME quiltalong!!

oh SWEET !!!! and I'd like to know the answer to Cindy's ? too , as I will be using stash !!! ( it will be purples for a baby girl coming into the world TODAY !) thanks !!

There are typically 42 squares in a layer cake, so that would be a safe number of squares to make. That's what I'll start with as I also want to use up my overloaded stash.

I'm so excited, I'm so excited. This is my first quilt along..........hey, if I'm away from home (and my machine/stash) for 2 weeks, can I just catch up when I get back???

I am SO bummed. My Layer Cakes are stuck in the postal strike in Canada. Booooo. I will never get them in time to finish by June 30. I'm sad, but I can't wait to start...eventually.

Super excited...my aunt is joining the quilt along with me. My Summer House fabric arrived yesterday and I can't wait to start cutting it! My aunt just ordered her fabric with the discount at the fat quarter shop...she's making a Halloween quilt.

This is my first quilt along. Super excited about keeping up with this. I already cut my print layer cake and it didn't take long at all. Now I'm stressed about making scrappy binding. I'm more of an organized piecer. So far I've separated my scraps into there color groups, making sure no two of the same fabric are together. Should I mix them all up or just take from each pile and sew together? I know, silly but im trying to break out of my organized shell...

I have cut all of my fabric ready for the next set of instructions.
My question is when you sew the scraps together do you use a straight seam or a diagonal one? All help is greatly accepted, binding and I are not really the best of friends......

Oh stinker. I have been sewing 5" squares in blocks of four, thinking that you had cut the layer cake into 4 squares. This is what I get for going a head of the teacher. :o) Looks like I better do a little calculating, in order to get it all figured out.
Can you tell me about the white measurements? Not that I want to go along too much more (smile) but then I can see weather or not I have enough fabric. Thanks soo much!!!

I just ordered my fabric - It's my first quilt along but it'll be my third of yours. I've done Mellie and Flipside. Love them.

okay, I'm kinda chomping at the bit for the next step. Man, these quilt alongs do try my patience. But I love this one already. I might have to go back and start another while i wait for 24 hours for the next step in this one! I think I'm slightly addicted to quilting!

Would it work if I added 3inch strips to the print squares before cutting into quarters (as sashing) instead of sewing the two fabrics on top of each other. Of course I wouldn't have the raw edges, but I am thinking it would look the same in the end. I have some nice moda solid white strips that would serve the purpose.
