maybe it's just me.

either way i'm blogging to tell yall that i'm gonna leave this funk behind.
cause me no likey. at all.

so with that being said...
i think it's time to stretch my creative mojo's legs.
fabric therapy = brillant thinking

Before I saw the name of the fabric selection, I was going to say that I would make a lap quilt with those fun fabrics, to take to all the fairs and shows I attend from late summer through Fall. My boys show rabbits, beef and dairy in 4-H. Some days (especially early mornings while they prepare) can be breezy sitting in the bleachers.

Sorry the funk sucks. I know the funk. :(
I think a very cool 'strip' quilt - or any quilty type thing you need (sewing machine cover/seat cushion) would look cool in those designs. Can't wait to see!

Working with these lovely fabrics should help, but yes, I DO know what you mean! Hope you are feeling better soon! Sometimes it just is.
btw, I just finished a quilt with mostly DS Fairgrounds - a different look w/o the Picnic, but still fantastic.

I think the funk grabs everyone at some point. The key is realizing you're in it and pulling yourself OUT! :) Fabric therapy seems like a GREAT course of action!
Those fabs looks so fun and playful. I'd try a wonky 9-patch or something like that!
Whatever you choose HAVE FUN!!!

If my little Gracie caught sight of this pile sitting in my sewing room, she would ask for a few skirts or a dress from a combination of these fun fabrics. So I might do that, or I might work them into a colorful picnic blanket or a few baby quilts. Love the colors!

I know that funk well. Perhaps the change of seasons will get it moving out the door?

Loving those fabrics....they would make lovely Dredens..don't you think? I have had those funks...not fun at all!!

Michele said...

One good thing about funks...they always pass. A little fabric action might be just the ticket.

CathyG said...

Love the fabric, but not the funk you're in, time to get funky and do something fun! I'd make a quilt for my new granddaughter who is coming out in the world next month!

Ryan made a mini bow tie quilt with DS fabrics, and I fell in LOVE! I've also seen a beautiful kaleidoscope quilt made with these, both are on my "to make list"!

Debbie B Sam said...

Bust the funk! Funk that! What would i do with them? give away all but the light blue and greens, and probably all the prints on those 2 colors but the dots and maybe the stripes? but that's just me! know you'll come up with something FAB

P.S. have my charms laid out for smitten in Prayer Flag - not digging it - the fabric choice not the pattern of course

I know the funk! Just Saturday night I blogged about my version of that funk and marked its ending too.

I think that the name of the DS-quilts line says it all. I'd make a picnic blanket/ quilt from that fabric. The summertime is winding down, but living in the South, you probably have a longer picnic season than here in NY. Also, indoor picnics brighten up a winter day, especially if you have a special picnic blanket.

Sarah Craig said...

I tend to agree that those would make a wonderful picnic/fairgrounds quilt! It's fair season in our neck of the woods.... Sorry about your funk! I feel your pain - I've had one chemically induced on me and I hate it! Can't wait for it to pass so I can get back to doing what I love.....

Now's also a great time to get out of the funk, with the weather cooling down slightly (well, up here in NY it has been this past week).

I know I'm not ready for another brutal winter, but this late summer and Fall business I can do for plenty of months. No more tripping the circuits because I turned the iron on while the AC was on too, Eep!

I'm thinkin' a log cabin quilt with white logs.

But that's just me.

If there is enough , I think I'd make 2 quilts (1 boy and 1 girl) to donate to one of the many charities that do blankets ! if not enough , 1 !!

I'm in a funk ; only a partial one ; the biggest thing suffering is that I am not sewing much .... I say boo to funk . God help us all !

Val said...

Ooooh you are not alone, I know the funk well :/ But you're awesome, you'll break out of it :) I do really love that line seeing yours makes me kick myself for not picking up the whole thing. Oh well I have too much fabric already!

Rebecca Lynne said...

Definitely relate to the funk. Sucks. But, silver lining?, this fabric rocks. I'd love to own it and create a quilt with a lot of white background to feature those fresh colors DS chose. End of summer fresh and crisp quilt.

Don't worry the funk will pass and your mojo will return!

Dawn said...

Oh, I know the funk. Boy, do I know the funk!!! Fabric therapy always helps, though. :)
I would make a picnic quilt to sit on with my crawler while we watch my oldest learn to ride his new bike.

Hey Rachel, how about sewing something small to get your mojo back - there is a DS Doll quilt swap starting soon here:

I'm seeing a fun summer table topper or runner's. I do know the kind of funk you're talking about and I'm happy to hear that getting your creative juices flowing gets you out of it. That method works for me too!

Sandy said...

I know what you mean by funk!! I have felt it this summer, big time. Was sorting in the sewing room today and feel a little like making my machine hummmm again! Lovely fabrics.

Patty said...

I'd play that funky music and start me a funk-a-delic quilt. :^)

Ryan said...

The funk has been making the rounds...

It's been seen in these parts recently too...

Hope you find a way to shake it soon!

Must be in the air...I have been feeling that way too! So hard to focus and feeling super over-whelmed...just ask hubby! Oh no...dont ask him! LOL

Hope you feel better and cant wait to see what you do with this yummy fabric!

great choice for funk therapy~but sometimes even my fabric overwhelms me~what to do, what to do!! so i read blogs and that helps move the funk along too! as for me, i am a bit 'funky' now, so i will gather inspiration from you and your wonderful blog comments, you have a great following~xo~

Kathleen Grace said...

Well first I would lay them all out and make different combinations with them on the table, then I would stack them and just look at them until a pattern or project came to me. Darn they're pretty! Don't think me too weird, you have a hard time cutting into new fabric too don't you? Maybe just a little?

make the Lazy Girl Littles quilts from Lazy Girl Designs. It is a single seam per block but it makes 3 very distinct quilts.

http://www.lazygirldesigns.com/blog/?p=5645

It is instructive to see what fabric placement does within the same pattern.

I know the funk all too well!

But that fabric would definitely pull me out! and I think I would pair it with some white solid and either do HSTs or possibly nice big rectangles like here.

Hope things get better!

Robin said...

Word. I can definitely relate! And fabric therapy? Definitely a winning solution. :) That is a pretty pile, indeed. Oh, the possibilities!

Love these fabrics. How could anyone be in a funk with these fun and funky fabrcs around!!

Linda said...

I'm glad the funk is moving on. The fabric would look lovely in little grand daughter dress or colorful quilts for them. Take care.

Everybody gets into a funk,I think!.. Let the fabrics rest for awhile. Let YOURSELF rest for awhile. It will come back to you. Been there. Done that. Hugs to you.

Gail said...

Maybe a 70's type quilt that screams Funk music!

I understand your funk more than you can ever know. I just wake up and say today will be a good day, make a list and then stick to it. I always feel better when I'm done. I think these would make a great zig zag picnic quilt!

Cheryl said...

Funk be gone...and oh yes I do know what you are talking about! A scrappy 9 patch popped in to my head when I saw your fabrics. They are sure yummy!

I hear you with the funk. This whole summer has been like that. Little blogging, little sewing, lots of keeping the kids happy. My oldest is with grandma this week - if this is any indication as to what it will be like to have 1 in school all day...well then, I think I'm going to like it! AND get some stuff done. :) Hugs to you!

PS- is that her new line or the DS line at Joann's. Because I NEED those blue dots. Just sayin'.

I wish I knew what put us into funks, they just stink. My 91 year old Grama says when she feels that way she says to herself "Anna, you get out of bed, put your feet on the floor and go do something!" Then she does and she feels alot better. I must get my resolve from her.
I also find that a little retail therapy really does do the trick.

What would I do with those fabrics? I nice quilt for a pic-a-nic, as Yogi Bear would say!

you just verbalized absolutely EVERYTHING I have been feeling this whole summer. Thank you. Let's kick this funks booty outta here! :)

This funk has been known to visit all parts of the quilting world. Bleh.
I see a pinwheel picnic quilt with these fabrics. The fun would never end! Picnics in summer, picnics in the livingroom in winter. Picnics any ole time for any occassion or reason.
Hope you de-funk soon.
Hugs, Deborah

Rachel, I would make a Double Slice quilt as made by Jenny at the Missouri Quilt Company (she has a video) THe blocks are big enough to show off those neat prints. Fun, fast and fabulous - what better way to get rid of a funk.

It's called the summer blah's. I know sooooo many people going through similar funks right now. Hope you come out of it soon! We've missed you!

I totally understand the funk and good for you for leaving it behind! I have lots of those prints. I am simply going to make a picnic quilt out of it with different widths of strips. Looking forward to seeing what your creative mojo comes up with (no doubt it will be fabulous!) SMiles~Beth

Would love to make a quilt quilt with the Rectangles and Squares pattern on the allpeoplequilt.com website! It will look marvelous!

A patchwork bean bag chair for the kids to sit on! Would be great! Get yourself out of that funk and back into the groove - know you will!

Mrs. Monkeyboy said...

I hear ya sister! I totally know the funk you speaketh of.

I see lovely wee HST and white with that bunch of fabric.

I am lusting after that grouping from afar and kicking myself for not going to get some before it flew out of my local-ish store.

Nana Jo said...

They are calling out to become pinwheels on a quilt!

BillieBee (billiemick) said...

A bad Funk is hard to get out of, but those fabrics sure can't hurt. I would toss some of them in with my fabric for The Farmers Wifes blocks and the rest for my Sylvia Bridal Sampler blocks.

So if you never decide I'll happily give them a home....grin.

Dairygal said...

Oh the dreaded funk...I've been in one before (or 28 or more...), I'm with the gal that said just get your feet out of bed and move! I also love the idea of a fair quilt. Something you can get dirty. Not too much white, but lots of color. I'd do a pinwheel or two, maybe a few stars, make'er a true sampler. Even put a blue ribbon in the middle (dare I speak of applique`?). Just a thought. So grab a glass of sweet tea, put on some country, and get to work... that fabric is calling for a turn around the ring to prove it's worthy!

luvtoquilt said...

Don't worry, Rachel. We've all been there. As a loyal follower of your blog, I know that you've had a lot on your plate lately. I wouldn't begin to tell you what to make with that fabric -- you're so creative! If it were me, it would be a traditional pattern or one of yours -- Smitten or Pinwheel.

Susanne said...

Rachel, I am in that funk too! I feel your pain!!! I hope you find either a very quick and easy pattern so you can use your bright and bold fabrics - maybe some instant gratification is in order! Take it easy and take care of yourself. :)

Kathy said...

well, i know the funk of which you speak. your chosen method (fabric therapy) has been approved of by my dear husband when he saw the fabrics posted. bet they would make a great summery picnic quilt. xoxoxo

suemac said...

That fabric is so sweet that anything you make from it will turn out great. I am a big DS fan. I am sure you will come up with a great idea like you always do.

maggie said...

Hey Rachel, I can relate to your funk! I think a nice lap quilt with these summery sweet fabrics to keep your knees warm when winter winds begin to blow would bring lovely summer thoughts...
cheers

What a fun lap quilt those fabrics would make!! Might even appeal to my youngest granddaughter when done. Definitely could make those fun colors work.

tawny_tawny said...

I know the funk very well. Great job getting creative to shake it. Let's hope it passes quickly!

I've been eyeing a pattern called garden fence lately. I think that stack would look great along with a darker neutral solid.

Or maybe 3-5 little decorative mini quilts for a wall?

Or a cute laptop case? Sometimes small projects are a satisfying little kick start.

It will be nice to see what you come up with :)

Marisa said...

I've definitely hit a funk this summer too! Hope you are breaking free and enjoying your DS fabrics!

Cindy said...

I know the funk very well. Mine is brought on when the chronic pain gets to be too much. My new thing I do to distract myself is quilt. Sometimes that puts me in a funk too, because I'm new at it. Like life with chronic conditions, I just keep plugging away at it though. Hope yours leaves soon!

Abbybeth said...

man am I in that funk too :( I think it's just been a summer that has wound up being over-committed and too busy, every single weekend since May has had obligations, most needing travel and there's no end until mid-October and the boyfriend just started law school several states away, so I'm just overwhelmed with everything! hoping we both snap out of it soon :)
