siggy block tutorial.

siggy block tutorial.

yayyy!!!
a siggy block tutorial.
on your marks...get set...go!!!

siggytut1

yall will need:
ONE 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" square of a white fabric.
{my white fabric of choice is bella solids by moda...my fav!!!}
& TWO 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" squares of a awesome print.
{this yellow print is by the amazing kate spain...it's her verna line.}

siggytut2

draw a line, corner to corner, on the WRONG side of your 2 1/2" squares.

siggytut3

lay one of your 2 1/2" squares on your 3 1/2" square, like so.

siggytut4

stitch across your drawn line.

siggytut5

rinse & repeat for the second 2 1/2" square.

siggytut6

press the 2 1/2" square towards the outside of your 3 1/2" square.

siggytut7

trim your excess fabric off 1/4" from your stitched line.
{this saves from bulkiness when quilting.}

siggytut8

stand back and look how pretty it is.
moving on.

siggytut9

now autograph it.
& tada...your very own siggy block.

for those inquiring minds:
the aqua print is by the talented patty young...it's her mezzanine line.
{i highly recommed getting a whole fat quarter bundle of it.}

pssst...come closer...
modern siggy swap sign ups are later this week.
are yall excited yet???

My mom was just telling me when she has those little corners (like geese too), she sews again 1/2 from the first stitching line, cuts in middle to end up with a bunch of tiny HSTs... Haven't tried it yet, but anything to get more blocks in an easier fashion!

Love the simplicity of this. What kind of pen are you using to sign your block with? I have some quilt labels to make and I need to know.

You don't need to sign me up...I kinda have my hands full of projects at the moment. Thanks!

So cool! I'd also love to know what kind of pen you use. Thanks for the tutorial!

rachel griffith said...

my pen = ultra fine point sharpie permanent marker

i have NEVER had a problem with writing on fabric with them.
i have NEVER had one bleed. EVER.

micron pigma pens are made specifically for writing on fabric, but i don't use them.
i'm addicted to my sharpies.

hope this helps.

Can't wait! Great tutorial. Thanks for the info on the pen...I have used the micron pigma pens and they "drag" on the fabric...even when backed with freezer paper. I'm in Medina County!!

Very simple tut, love it. However I do have a question. What kind of pen are you signing with. I find when I sign it is hard because it never really stays put like paper, so I have to put freezer paper to the back? And yes where do we sign up, here? Like i Need something else to sign up for lol! :P

Thank you sooo much for the tutorial! Don't know if I will have the time to participate in a swap, but I think I will make good use of this tutorial anyway! I'm getting married this summer, and I'm thinking of making siggy's for every guest to sign so I can make a quilt filled with good memories:-)

I just discovered your site and love this tutorial! I belong to a group and we have been talking about wanting to do some type of quilt but a lot of the gals worry they aren't talented enough. I think this idea would be fantastic!

Love your tutorial. I am working with your idea with a twist. I am making a siggy quilt for a friend who has recently been diagnosed with cancer. I purchased shades of purple fabrics to make 60+ squares. I have asked friends and family to donate $2 per square to cover costs and take one and sign it. I will assemble the quilt with binding and backing of purple, ending up with a lap sized siggy quilt. Another friend is putting together a scrapbook of notes and pictures from the participating families to send with the quilt. I chose to use 6" white squares and 5" colored squares. My limitation was that for many fabrics I had one 5" of a color. After experimenting a bit I figured out a solution. Instead of using two colored squares per square, I used one cut in half diagonally. I have a great cutting ruler with a 45 angle on it that I used to place the triangles for sewing. They have set up perfectly. Less waste too! (though next time if I used your method I will certainly try the HST idea from one of the posts here. Thanks for such a terrific tutorial and idea!
