let's talk scraps. (and stash.)

11 February 2013

let's talk scraps.
so, let's talk scraps. (and stash.)

what makes a scrap piece of fabric?
i've given this some thought, but i don't think that all scraps are treated equally.
and correct me if i'm wrong, but i think that we all have different views on our fabric stashes.

what makes a scrap a scrap?
one might argue that a scrap is based on the actual size of the piece of fabric.
example: 2" squares or 2 1/2" strips.

another might argue that a scrap is any piece of fabric leftover from piecing your quilt.
example: 6" x 8" rectangle, 1/4 yard cut, or even an unused fat quarter.

and then, there are those that might argue that if it's at least an 1/8 of a yard, it's considered stash, not scraps.

so, what do y'all think?
what's YOUR definition of scrap?
and at what size do your scraps get added to your stash?
inquiring minds want to know.

let's talk meal planning. (& grocery shopping.)

02 April 2012

what's cooking.

it's seems yall are always interested when i post my recipes. <--yayyy!!!
so i thought it would be okay to devote a whole post to meal planning and grocery shopping.

i know everyone is different when it comes to meal planning and grocery shopping.
some people fly by the seat of their pants, some people plan weekly, and some people plan monthly. <--yes monthly.

we are one of those families that plan our meals monthly.
in doing so, we also shop monthly. <--i know, but it totally works for us.

PLANNING-
here's what we do:
around the 30th or so, i ask all of the family members what they would like to eat for the month.
the kids almost always say the same things: mac & cheese, alfredo, & pizza.
hubby & i generally mix things up according to the month, the season or if we're expecting guests.

after i get everyone's input, i sit down and plan out the meals for every day in the month.
it might sound a little daunting, but it generally only takes me an hour or so and then i'm done planning - for a whole month!!! <--it makes my life SO much easier.

like most families we have "special" nights.
example: pizza night, taco night, etc.
take us for instance, we have mexican night every tuesday and italian night every thursday.
and the trick to not getting bored is that i alternate within that theme.
one mexican night we'll have tacos while another mexican night we'll have mexican gumbo.
i think that by having these "special" nights, it helps plan our meals.

while planning the menu, i always leave one "open" slot per week.
this bodes well for having a "leftover" night or a night to go out to eat.
so with all that being said, if you take out all the "special" nights and "open" nights, the meal planning is easier.

obviously other things contribute to my meal planning.
things like holidays, guest request, sports banquets, etc.

on top of our main meals, i have to consider breakfast & lunch foods as well as snacks. <--sometimes even desserts :)
to me, this is super easy planning because i know what my family consumes at these times so i just add these items to my shopping list.
keep in mind that summer time requires a bit more planning because we have extra mouths home from school.

and on top of all that, i have to consider things that we buy & need on a monthly basis.
things like tea bags, flour, sugar, etc.

note: i don't buy certain staples for the whole month.
things like milk, eggs & bread.
there's NO way i could store a month's worth of milk at our house. <--not gonna happen. lol.
and everyone wants fresh bread. and fresh eggs.
so even though we do a big shopping trip once a month, we'll stop and grab something here or there as needed.

so after all that planning, i make my shopping list.
we shop at few different stores. <--again, it sounds like a pain, but we save LOTS of money by doing so.

another thing that i do is add a few items to the list to make up an extra meal or two.
i really like having extra meals just in case. cause you never know.
instances these meals are used for: a friend is in need, no leftovers, it's not in the budget for going out to dinner, the church is having a potluck, etc.

SHOPPING-
we get all of our meats directly from our local butcher.
i highly encourage all of yall to look into finding a local butcher.
not only are all the meats WAY fresher, but they generally have better prices, better cuts, and better selection.

we generally get the remainder of our grocery list from walmart.
after years of comparing prices with our local grocery stores, walmart almost always has the best price. <--and this is name brand stuff.

oh and obviously if it's summer time, we'll get fresh produce from local farmers &/or produce stands.

STORAGE-
after shopping for our monthly groceries, we come home and divvy up our goods.
example: we'll buy 10lbs of ground chuck, so we'll come home and divide it into "meal" portions and place them into freezer ziploc bags.
we also have a section in our basement where we store canned goods and extra groceries that won't fit in our kitchen pantry.

it sounds like alot of work, which i guess in hindsight, it is.
BUT at the end of the day . . .
the planning takes about an hour, the shopping takes a few hours, the storage takes about an hour, and then i'm done. <--for a whole month.

and as yall can see, i write the weekly menu on our kitchen dry erase board.

BUDGET-
i know someone will ask, so here's the monthly food budget for our family of 6:
@$75-$150 at the butcher, depending on our choices. <--things like roasts, ribs & steaks quickly change our total. lol.
@$300-$400 at walmart, depending on our choices.
@$100 for here & there shopping. <--extra milk, bread, eggs &/or emergency sweet tooth attacks.

so how do yall do your meal planning and grocery shopping?!?!
inquiring minds want to know.

a sudden urge.

19 March 2012

a sudden urge.

well i've suddenly decided that i need fun pillows for our bed.
and for the livingroom.
and for the kid's rooms.
and maybe for outdoor seating.
dear hubby: i know you aren't aware of this decidion just yet, but remember you love me.

i've also decided on which fabrics to start with.
i have a delish idea for a body pillow. <--which might turn into a new tutorial!!!
but i'm in need of smaller pillow ideas.

you would think that with the amount of pillows i have fav'd on flickr, this wouldn't be a problem.
so apparently i'm stubborn. <--who?!?! me?!?! stubborn?!?! no!!! *wink*

yall feel free to feed my stubborness & tell me YOUR favorite pillow.
link to the pattern {or your pics} if possible.
and i promise i'll try not to become even more indecisive about pillow making.

oh and because i know someone will ask . . .
fabrics = new pure elements & oval elements by art gallery fabrics.

ps - i read every single comment on my things that make you go hmmm post.
i know i said it on facebook, but i'll say it again . . .
i really do have the best readers a girl could ask for.
thanks for all the super sweet comments/emails.
i love yall more than i love fresh peaches. <--and that's ALOT!!! :D

let's talk solids.

27 January 2012

let's talk solids.

i personally love solids.
but anyone that has been reading this blog should already know that.
:P

i utilize solids in almost every single quilt that i design or make. {see proof here.}
there's just something about the crisp, clean break from prints that just melt my heart.

well like i told yall the other day, i've been working on new patterns.
to give a little sneak peak . . . one of those new patterns uses nothing but solids.
specifically the solids pictured above.
{fabric = pure elements by art gallery fabrics}

while picking fabrics for this particular pattern, i started to wonder what other peeps thought about solids.

you see, i believe that some quilts can look just as good, if not better, in solids.
that's not to say that i don't love me some prints. <--yall KNOW i do.
BUT i think that sometimes you just need a burst of color.
a color that is completely null & void of any distraction from prints &/or pictures.

so what do yall think about quilts made entirely of solids?!?!
are you for or against it?!?!
inquiring minds want to know.

merry giftmas :)

19 December 2011

merry giftmas.

i don't know about yall, but i'm busy working on handmade christmas gifts.

my current project is making a gozillion homemade heating pads.
vanessa has a simple tutorial, if you're looking for one.

they make the perfect gift for teachers, hubby's coworker's wives or even the bachelor best friend who has been known to take over the one that you made for yourself.

i'd love to know what yall are crafting for christmas gifts this year.
please leave a link of what you're gifting or working on.
either a link showing the finished product or the pattern/tutorial that you are using.

i can't wait to sit down with a nice cup of hot chocolate and read through yall's giftmas list.
and maybe i'll even pick a winner or two :)

sewing with oilcloth.

08 December 2011

sewing with oilcloth.

fact: i've always been afraid to sew with oilcloth.
so much so that i've never even purchased oilcloth or laminated fabrics.

while at market, i just happened to come across a book signing with miss kelly mccants.
she was promoting her book sewing with oilcloth.
needless to say, i was intrigued, so i stuck around.

kelly talked a little bit about oilcloth and her book.
she even handed out little samples of oilcloth so we could make a small project from the book.
note: i totally recommend her book. <--it's SUPER informative.

sewing with oilcloth.

well i finally got the courage to play with my oilcloth :)
obviously this was a smaller project, but sometimes a small project is all it takes.
btw: i think i see some cute oilcloth banners in my future.

so are yall for or against oilcloth???

to hide or not to hide???

11 October 2011

to hide or not to hide???

i'm curious...
do yall store your quilts with the front facing out or do yall hide the fronts???

here's my two cents:
mostly our quilts sit {or hang} with their fronts facing out.
but then again, depending on the quilt, i might store them with the backing facing out.
oh and if i travel with my quilts, i always fold them with the backing facing out.

note: my kids have their own quilts plus we have quilts that we all use & abuse.
{livingroom quilts, quilts we play peekaboo with, quilts that build tents, quilts for football, etc.}
but we do have some quilts that are my "working girls" that travel to shops & such.
and those are "no touchy" for the kiddos. lol.

so which do yall do???
and why???

remember my bag confession???
well i should've added this to that confession...
sometimes i have a harder time picking bag fabrics than i do quilt fabrics.
i know it's weird, but it's the truth.

i'm in love with the top black print. <--like hardcore in love.
but i can't figure out which solid should be my lining.

so here's where yall come in...
should i use aqua or black???

it sounds a little confusing, but it's quite simple. and addicting.
{check out a pinterest video tutorial here.}

fyi: i said nayyy to the pinterest bandwagon for a while.
but then i kept getting alerts that peeps were pinning ps i quilt & rachel griffith pics left & right.

let's talk binding.

24 May 2011

let's talk binding.

so binding...
you love it or you hate it?!?!
you cut strips at 2 1/2" or something else?!?!
you make it scrappy or you make it matchy matchy?!?!
you make it straight grain or bias?!?!
you do it by hand or you do it by machine?!?!
you prepare them in advance or you wait until last minute?!?!

inquiring minds want to know.

here's my two cents:
i love it. <--but i used to hate it.
i cut my strips at 2 1/4" <--i highly encourage all yall to try it at least once.
i mostly do matchy matchy. <--but i love a good scrappy binding.
i make double fold straight grain. <--i'm scared of bias binding. honestly.
i machine prep and finish by hand. <--i personally can't stand machine binding. ick.
i normally wait until the last minute. <--i made 5 bindings this morning though.

i don't know about yall, but my quilty room is a constant work in progress.

so i clean it like once a week-ish.
it's generally when i can't stand the site of it.

yall know this feeling...
fabric is everywhere.
magazines here. books there.
notes laying on the floor, pinned to the wall & in between fat quarters. <--never where you thought you put it.

how often do yall clean your quilty spaces?!?!

to rip or not to rip???

23 March 2011

ripping vs cutting

so let's talk ripping vs cutting.

while i was in san antonio i talked with the owner of sew special quilts about this very subject.
fyi: they rip, but they will cut if asked.
while talking with her i thought...i wonder how everyone else feels about this.

i have seen it done both ways.
i have heard the positives & negatives to both sides.
i've heard the "that's how shops did it in the ol' days" rebutle.
i've even seen shops lose business because of the "cutting is against shop policy" line.

so i wanted to talk to a few of my fav quilt shops. {one brick & mortar. one online.}
i wanted to get views from both sides.
it just so happens that they're the opposite of each other in the ripping/cutting department.
which made my research go quicker. lol.

my fav online shop = fat quarter shop
they cut.
they cut so many layers & orders that it would take forever to live up to their SUPER fast shipping if they had to rip orders all day.
and on top of that when you rip, it damages about 1/2" on either side of your fabric by stretching & pulling.
they agree that ripping is good for straight of grain, but they'll stay cutters.

my fav brick & mortar = people, places & quilts - summerville, south carolina
they rip.
it's important to them that you have a straight of grain piece rather than pretty edges.
they recommend washing & pressing your fabrics to even out the distortion from ripping.
although they are firm believers in ripping, they will cut if asked.

so let's have an open debate...
to rip or not to rip???

are yall for or against ripping???
inquiring minds want to know.
if you're a quilt shop...i highly encourage you to jump in and give your two cents.

& because i know someone is gonna ask...
