i personally love solids.
but anyone that has been reading this blog should already know that.

i utilize solids in almost every single quilt that i design or make. {see proof here.}
there's just something about the crisp, clean break from prints that just melt my heart.
well like i told yall the other day, i've been working on new patterns.
to give a little sneak peak . . . one of those new patterns uses nothing but solids.
specifically the solids pictured above.

while picking fabrics for this particular pattern, i started to wonder what other peeps thought about solids.
you see, i believe that some quilts can look just as good, if not better, in solids.
that's not to say that i don't love me some prints. <--yall KNOW i do.
BUT i think that sometimes you just need a burst of color.
a color that is completely null & void of any distraction from prints &/or pictures.
so what do yall think about quilts made entirely of solids?!?!
are you for or against it?!?!

I love solids. I wish my LQS carried more than just black and white. I have a hard time matching them to projects and have to order 3 or 4 1/2 yard cuts to find one. I'm going to get a moda color card to save myself the hassle, but I also want a Kona color card. Sigh. I would love a wall of solids to gaze at.
I use solids all the time. I love them. I can't say for sure I've ever made a quilt without them.
I made this colour pinwheel quilt top using Connecting Threads charm pack of solids. They don't sell precuts in solids anymore. But it was easy and fun to do it.

totally for all-solid quilts! Sometimes, they're just such a relief for the eyes. I think they also really enhance the lines and contours of the pattern.
I'm not a big fan of solids. I like the different spacial values different prints provide, even if they read solid. I might add a solid here or there, but never only solids.
I'm using 3 different solids in a quilt I'm making now, along with a few prints and I can honestly say that I am loving them on their own. The luscious aquas and greens I'm using would look fab in a solid only quilt. Hmmmm...will have to put this under consideration for my next quilt.
I am totally moving more into solids for my piecing and utilizing the prints for beautiful quilt backs.

I always choose fabric for the certain shade of color that I imagined when I designed a quilt. When I have found the shade that I was looking for I don´t care if it is with prints or solids.
I like solids for the negative space like linen. For the quiltpatterns I usually use fabrics with prints that read solid from a distance.
Yeah, those stacks of solids are totally making me want to do an all solid quilt. Guess that's next on the list!
Love the solids...unfortunately we don't have a LQS who carries a good selection and I'm quite dependant on the internet for ordering. I love the few manufacturers who have put out color cards...I can match colors myself and understand the weight of the fabric before I order.
I haven't made good use of solids in the past but they are growing on me and that pile of solids is gorgeous!
I really love solid and those in the pic ... are wonderful colours!!!!!

I'm all for it! I'll admit - it was my attraction to prints that really got me started sewing again, but I really love the mod look that an all solids gives. You must know about the "For the love of solids" flickr group, right??
For! Definitely! I've been pinning lots of awesome quilts on Pinterest that are solely solids. In my own projects, though, I have a really hard time breaking away from prints. There are so many that I love, and I want to use them all at once- I shouldn't, but I love the crazy mesh of tons of different patterns together. I should probably slow down, step back, and re-incorporate more solids into my work...
Yep, solids all the way. My little shop stocks nothing but tone on tones and solids - you name the colour we have it so I've had to learn to make the most of these beauties.

I am so lucky! When I started quilting 20 yrs ago fabric was just starting to move from little calicos and plaids and my local quilt shop owner had wonderful vision for color and design. She carried every color of Kona...unheard of then. So from the beginning I learned how to use solids in my quilts. This stack is so luscious Rachel, looking forward to seeing what you create!

Sometimes it's an awesome way to make something amazing on a tighter budget too, especially as most solids are almost half the cost of some prints.

I would say your Escapade quilt in the Poseidon Kona stack is definitely proof of a quilt looking awesome in solids! It has long been a favorite of mine.

Sometimes I feel I really just want to use solids exclusively and really paint with them, but making things for other people, which is mainly what I do! always ends up in using them in combination with prints, because I'm not sure they'd like solids only! Vicious circle?!!

i use solids to frame, border or accent the prints i workd with. i do have patterns on my to do list that use solids only, though. so, i'm all for doing solids only quilts!
I just started quilting and am in love with all the beautiful prints!! That said, i have begun to incorporate solids into my work and have invested in a significant amount of Kona. I bought a card and feel driven to own EVERY color! I am obsessed with color! It makes me happy and I am definitely seeing much more solid in my future! I am LOVING those Art Gallery solids! I.must.have.
I'm for, of course. I know they have strong shocking colours, but a good desiger or quilter can adjust the ingredients. Also tartufo mushroom can be too, but if you dose it, it's so good!
I've made a baby sized quilt for my little guy made out of solids. I LOVE solids! They are more affordable than prints, and I think there's much more flexibility with using nothing but solids.
I love solids but my lqs doesn't carry any because the owner says they won't sell! I mean she carries NONE!!! I think that they are both striking and restful at the same time. I'm tired of ... Marbles, etc.. I can't wait to see what you make.
I'm anxious to get started on this Nancy Rink Pattern. It is all Marcus Bros. solids! I'm usually a sucker for white, but fell head over heals for this black background!

You had me at solids,... they are my true love. I love quilts made all from solid fabrics. They remind me of Amish quilts and their amazing color combos.
I love solids, and I think the trick nowadays is to make an all-solids quilt feel modern. But I've seen some amazing demonstrations of just that lately, and it has my gears cranking! There's something about the absence of prints that makes the block designs and quilting really pop!
I love solids! I am a firm believer in using all solids in quilts. But don't get me wrong, I love my prints too.
I am kind of a print whore. With a limited budget, and the choice between solid and prints, Its prints every time. But my thinking is starting to change. Those are a couple of great bundles of solids. I have made one quilt totally from solids. It is very colorful and a manly kind of quilt in primary colors. I would make that pattern again.
I love solids! I'm one of those quilters who likes to focus on the piecing, and the quilting. Sometimes printed fabrics can get in the way of what really is beautiful about a quilt. I just finished your smitten pattern in solids for my Husbands Grandma. She lives in New Orleans so I used greens, purples, and Deep yellow-ey gold’s. It was gorgeous! Thank you pattern and the inspiration!
I big pink puffy heart solids. I have 2 quilts planned right now with nothing but solids, and a list of solids on my wish list.
There are some gorgeous prints out there (and I have plenty in my stash), but I have seen so many solid only quilts that just take my breath away. I think you are more able to focus on the design rather than the blend of different prints. A solid only quilt is on my must-do list, I have everything sitting there waiting, just need more time!
I love solids. I find myself drawn to prints first but I always throw in a few solids for balance. That's a pretty stack of fabrics, can't wait to see the new patterns.

I have been trying to come up with a color scheme, using solids, for a lonestar quilt. I think I've drawn a hundred or more in paint, and still havent decided. This palette is gorgeous but something tells me the hubs would veto it for being too girly.
Love them! I am doing an Amish inspired sampler quilt with an on-line group I belong to and am loving using all the colors with the black background. Can't wait to see your pattern!

I love all-solids quilts. I have made a couple, and love them for their simplicity and how the colors play off each other without adding in the s=distraction of prints.
Love solids! I am for ANY quilt in ANY style and fabric that pleases the maker of that quilt. But solids sound especially wonderful :)

Having been inspired by so many solids only quilts... I have to say I'm for them... um, even though I've yet to make my own solids only quilt. Your palette is gorgeous. Can't wait to see what you have to share.
Love em. I have made several and there are more in the making....it is my go to choice right now. Love a print but my first thought when I look at a quilt to start is solids, and Art Gallery solids are to die for!!
I also love solids but my biggest love is the prints. It takes me back to the first dress that I made out of feed sacks. I am not really that old, LOL but feed sacks were around where I lived in the south. I guess it is called "personal preference".

I've been toying with the idea of doing a wholly solid quilt for my brother. He loves black and red and I think the right pattern in solids would be really striking.
Hmm. I always love the quilts people post, using solids. For myself, I tend to always migrate towards prints. In my stash the closest i have to solids are batiks and tone on tone. What a good excuse to boost my stash!

I absolutely love solids! I'm growing my rainbow stash of Konas all the time. My local modern fabric store, Spool of Thread Sewing Lounge in Vancouver, has all the Konas, lucky me!

I think solid color quilts can be stunning! After all, Amish quilts are from solid colors! I think it will look great!
I'm very much for! I first started quilting when inspired by an Amish Shadows wallhanging at the home of an Amish woman that my Grammy used for quilting. I went back to Grammy's house and made the same wallhanging in a different color. Although I now use lots of prints, I'm still drawn to Amish patterns.
Have been a solids fan since the 70's! So pleased new qualities are now on the market and just drool over Art Gallery. They feel the best.

I don't mind solids, but WHY do people use homespun in their quilts. I know it is cheaper but they are sooooooooo flat, grainy and just yuck.

the Amish-Inspired Quilts from Becky Goldsmith and Linda Jenkins' book by the same name published by Piece O' Cake.
What a yummy set of fabrics those are! I can't wait to see what you stitch up with them. I'm obsessed with solids. I can't get enough of them in my quilts. It took me a while to do my first quilt of just solids, but ever since then I have to remind myself to use prints! The solids seem to show up designs more. Plus, they are cheaper so I tell myself I can buy more fabric!

WAY back in the dark ages when I was learning to quilt, I was in the midst of Quilt Class #3. (I had already taken Quilt Class #2 and #1 .... all of these classes were sampler quilt classes.) This was in the mid 1980's when all things calico and country were the new "in" thing. So, I chose calico / print / country fabrics for quilts #1 and #2. By the time Quilt Sampler Class #3 rolled around, I was smitten by a quilt made of all solids in an "Esprit" catalogue ..... so I chose all solids for my sampler quilt .... and I was met with a raised eyebrow or 2 by my teacher and classmates ..... "Are you sure you don't want to add some prints?" ..... So, now that solids are back in style again, I guess me and the Amish are too ! (so that was my VERY long way of saying I've liked all solid quilts since the dark ages !!! :)
I've only just started quilting and look around the quilting blogs for inspiration - I must say, some of the most visually stunning quilts I have come across have been in solids rather then patterns. I'm a convert, definitely.
I think I'm in the minority but I'm just not into solids. I've only been quilting for about 8 months and no solid has tempted me so far. However, being 50 years old I have the right to change my mind in as little at 15 minutes so ask me again in a month!
I hardly ever buy solids, the prints scream so loudly to me and the solids seem to whisper when I'm in the fabric shop or shopping on line, but I am determined to buy more solids, because I've lately been drawn to quilts that are predominantly solid. I'm so excited to see the things you are up to in this area! So count me in the "for" column.
I love solids. I think that when you are using patterned fabric you need a little solid so the eye has someplace to rest. All solid quilts are often gorgeous.
It is hard to find some solids around here in Central TX. I looed at a big store in New Braunfels for 30's shades of solids and finally found some closer to me in another town. When I first strated in quilting, I only wanted to use solids, and people said I shouldnt. But I still care for them, like ice cream colors of the rainbow
Using just solids Hmm They look lovely but I have not tried that myself just yet. I like to have a blend of both. But I am open to trying something different

I would have never thought of doing an entire quilt out of solids...But, I am always up for new ideas and fresh looks so I think that you have inspired me to do one!
I'm sort of chuckling at that thought that using solids for a quilt is a "new idea". Nope look at some of the historical quilts!
I love the way solids can calm down prints, unify a quilt or just boldly stand on their own.

I have just recently started to buy some Kona solids. Buying a bit at a time. I have made quilts in the past with solids - especially for babies. Just what I need - adding to the stash!
I like quilts made from solids.... I haven't been brave enouph to tackle one yet...but someday I will!
i love them. you know when i started quilting in 2001 the teacher i took my beginner class from said 'never use just solids' and if you want to make a quilt look solid use a color on color tone type. well now we fast forward to 2012 and the solids are all the rage! i use them often too.
