inspired by color.

18 December 2015

dear swap partner, these are a few of my favorite things. i'm not hard to please. i love color, obviously. and according to this collage, i am drawn to all the common quilty shapes; hexagons, squares, and triangles. even though you probably don't know wha
i made this collage as an inspiration for my swap partner in a rainbow mini swap via instagram.
(i'm @rachelgriffith)
it's just such a happy and pretty collage. sigh.

i couldn't help it.
i just had to post it here, in the hopes that it makes YOU smile.
have a great day, y'all!

great granny twist blog hop. (& giveaway!)

17 December 2015

great granny twist blog hop - title
welcome to the great granny twist blog hop, y'all.

if you're new here, allow me to introduce myself.
i'm rachel. i love all things quilty, family, and starbucks-y.
i hope you look around and stay for a while!

great granny twist blog hop - great granny squared book
those lovely peeps over at fat quarter shop are at it again! this time, we're celebrating the one year anniversary of lori holt's book, great granny squared! (hey, lori! xoxo.)

in case you aren't familiar with the book, lori shows us that the great granny square is (easily) made up of 4 generations of squares; the baby, the mama, the granny, and the great granny.
it's a wonderfully detailed book and is FULL of delicious eye candy.
yes, you NEED it. trust me on this, folks. ;)

for the celebration, fat quarter shop asked a group of bloggers to sew along (and share) our own "twist" on using a block from the book to make a project.
if y'all haven't seen the project they whipped up, check out this YouTube video.
adorable, right?! (;

great granny twist blog hop - my lavender rice warmer
today, i get to share my project! yayyy!
i used a "mama" block from the book and made a little lavender rice warmer.
this isn't the first rice warmer i've made, but it IS the first one i've made on the smaller size.
(this measures 6" square.)
why so small? well, because i wanted a little rice warmer to use at nighttime.
the lavender smells AMAZING, which helps me wind down.
and i don't have to give up too much space in my comfy bed by having a huge rice warmer.
priorities! LOL.

great granny twist blog hop - my lavender rice warmer
project stats:
size = 6" x 6"
fabrics = modern minis by lori holt for riley blake AND modern background - paper by zen chic for moda AND cotton + steel basics
thread = aurifil 2600 dove 50wt
quilting = rachel griffith using her fancy schmancy walking foot (;

today's productivity lead to something really cute! i can't wait to show y'all exactly what i made. it's almost ready! ✂️❤️✂️ #PSIQUILT #sewingwithpsiquilt #fqsfun

sundance dresden. (& a blog hop!)

20 November 2015

my dresden.
hey, y'all. (;
nice to see you again so soon!
(a promise is a promise!)

so today, i'm participating in a fun blog hop sponsored by our good friends over at fat quarter shop.
they contacted me a few weeks ago, and told me all about their newest YouTube video, sundance dresden pillow.
i was asked if i wanted to join along, and of course, i said, "yes!"

i chose cotton + steel basics are my fabrics, and i'm pretty darn happy that i did!
to be 100% honest, i'm supposed to be showing y'all a completed pillow, but as you can see, it's not a pillow.
why? well, because i love it so much, that i couldn't decide if i wanted to finish the pillow or make a mini quilt for my wall!

see, that's where y'all come in!
let's take a vote!
pillow or mini quilt?

my dresden. (up close.)

remember about 4 years ago when i told y'all that i wasn't cool enough to make dresden plates?
in case you weren't around then, just know this, i've been scared of them for years. seriously!
i was really freaking out about making a dresden, let alone a double dresden.
BUT now, i'm pretty darn proud of myself that i made my first one.
and i can totally see how people get addicted to making them!
kim's video made it such an easy process! (thanks, kim!)

if y'all wanna make your own pillow (or mini quilt) here's everything you need to know to get yourself going!

recently.

for the first time in forever, i finished a quilt top! «full reveal coming soon!» #rachelgriffithdesigns
well, hi!
i know it's been a while. (5 months?!)
i've recently made a deal with myself, to get this blog back on track.
i know it's mush faster to post to instagram, but i do miss writing here.
and i honestly miss using a real camera, too.

in case y'all aren't on instagram, here's what i've been up to for the last few months.

see that picture at the top of this post?
well, that's a quilt top i FINALLY completed.
i can't wait to show y'all the whole thing once it's quilted.
it's a new design in my pattern line.
it's coming soon!

today's trimmings. ✂️ #rachelgriffithdesigns #konacotton #robertkaufman
i've also been working on another quilt!
this one isn't completely pieced yet, because i keep changing the layout.
y'all do that, too, right? (;

i just realized that i never showed y'all a finished pic of this lovely! (also, why are table runners so tricky to photograph?) 💛🍃🎃 #sewingwithpsiquilt
i actually made something seasonal (& on time!) this year!
this is probably my favorite fall runner of all time now.
i'm biased. it happens.

i'm excited to start this project! how could i not be when it starts with fabrics like these? 😉✂️ #sewingwithpsiquilt #cottonandsteel
i FINALLY got to play around with these pretty fabrics!
i'll show y'all more about these later this week!
promise.

we're getting somewhere, folks! it totally helped that the aforementioned five year old decided to crawl into her bed and fall asleep this afternoon! (whaaaat?!) ✂️💚💙 #sewingwithpsiquilt #scrappyquilt #scruffilyquilt #aQuilt
i started this quilt for a friend of ours, in ohio,
their sweet son, the same age as our youngest son, has been in and out of the hospital.
since we're not there in person, i figure a quilt is the next best thing.

as i was lazing about with my coffee this morning, i had a strong desire to pull this out and work on it. i haven't touched this project for over a year. (thanks for keeping track, instagram!) will this be the fall i actually finish it? the world may neve
i've been working on my modern maples quilt! YES!
there's only 5 more blocks to go!
i think i can, i think i can, i think i can!

a long, long time ago, @thimbleblossoms & @bonniecottonway, debuted their first fabric line, #cottonblossoms. (circa 2008.) and i'm not gonna lie, i was drawn more to the aquas, greens, and oranges, as opposed to all the chocolate browns and brick reds. w
oh, and i FINALLY got around to putting the binding on this fall scruffily quilt!
as i type this, it's being loved to death on our living room couch.
i haven't even had a chance to wash it yet.

so you see, i've been doing pretty good.
i still have my rough days, but i'm chugging along.
chugga chugga choo choo.

anyways, like i said, i'm really going to make an effort to bring this ol' blog of mine back to life.
people still read blogs, right? LOL.

i have other pics to show y'all, but i don't want to throw everything out at once.
should you be interested, there's more via my instagram. (i'm @rachelgriffith)

it's nice to see YOU again!

sashay.

03 June 2015

sashay.
i've been working hard on a new pattern release.
i have four new patterns in all.
i'll share the first two with y'all this week.
the last two will follow along soon.

up first, sashay.

sashay.
this quilt is layer cake friendly.
if y'all are anything like me, i like to hoard, i mean, stash layer cakes.
so, grab your favorite layer cake, some coordinating fabrics, and a background ... boom. you're done.

this quilt does use a template, which is in included, but don't let that put you off.
it's simple to piece and goes together smoothly.

sashay. close up
i love this design and i'm hoping that y'all will, too.

quilt stats:
size = 70" x 70"
fabric = happy go lucky by bonnie & camille for moda
quilting = darla padilla

so, if you're looking for your own sashay pattern:
the pdf pattern is available HERE. (ships via email after your purchase.)
be sure to share your sashay quilts on social media using #SashayQuilt. i can't wait to see what you make!

baby steps.

31 March 2015

escapade loves poseidon.
so, here's the truth, i've been battling some health problems.

i have suffered from anemia for years, thanks to an iron deficiency.
with each pregnancy, it became progressively worse.
i felt it getting worse this last summer/fall, but i tried my damndest to push through it.
that's what we moms and business owners do, right?

well, apparently, i was pushing too hard.
or maybe i'm just a stubborn southern woman.
either way, there finally came a day, when i just had to cave.

on top of having iron-deficiency anemia, i've been hard on myself.
i've been disgusted with my inability to just be myself.
(why are we so hard on ourselves?)
my body wouldn't let me get off my couch to cook supper, let alone, run a business.
needless to say, i was in a dark place, emotionally, as well as physically.
and that's the truth.

as most of y'all know, i stopped teaching, blogging, and hanging out with you via social media.
behind the scenes, i stopped quilting all together.
quilting is just the surface, really.
and at the end of the day, the things that mattered most, i really felt like i was failing at.
like being a good wife, mother, and friend.

i am behind on everything under the sun, BUT i'm writing to tell y'all that i am seeing a light at the end of this tunnel.
thanks to a new medical course of action, i'm starting to feel more and more like myself.
i'm thankful that we seem to have tapped into my anemia when we did and have things turning around in the right direction.
and furthermore, i'm super thankful for every single one of you that has reached out to inquire about my family and i.

i'm trying to take baby steps here and get my feet wet.
even if it is, just dipping my toes in the shallow end.
so, if you're waiting on an order or an email, please know that i haven't forgotten about you! mean it!
