respect.

r e s p e c t.

i love yall.
yall know that.

i wouldn't blog if i didn't enjoy it.
i wouldn't blog if it didn't help, inspire or teach people.
really.

so why did i start a blog post like this?!?!

well i have google alerts set for me & this here blog.
you know...just in case.

99.9% of the time i get a notice & it's cool.
susy whatsherface at blahblahzee blog made my sruffily quilt.
so i comment and then the blogging world is a happy place.

today was different.

that little alert popped into my email and WHAM!
someone decided it would be cool to copy & paste my whole blog post into a forum.
not a good idea folks.

i work really hard on this blog.
it may not seem like it, but trust me that i put alot of time & effort into ps i quilt.

i do "get" that so & so was just trying to open the ripping vs cutting convo on a message board.
i can respect that.
it is a very interesting conversation.
but use your own words, please.

so i write this special post to say this...
RESPECT what bloggers put out there.
RESPECT their time & effort.
RESPECT copyrights.
& RESPECT the person behind the blog.

that is all.

edit to add:
i've had a few questions about
google alerts...
basically you type in your blog name, your company name, etc.
and ANY TIME your name {or whatever you set the alert to} is put on the internet, you get emailed about it.
you can choose if you want to be notified per instance, once a day, once a week, etc.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT FOLKS.

♥ rachel

Omg, did they really copy and paste it with your name in and everything? Did they cite you or claim it as their own? Either way, it's egregious 'virtual' behaviour! Sheesh!

oh, snap. sorry someone did that to you girl...but very tactful call-out. good job. :)

I am so sorry this happened with you, Rachel! I have a blog too and I know how hard we work in them just to make the people happier. As you sad, this calls RESPECT. Unfortunatly, some people do not know what this what means...
Keep going on, because you have a lot of fans that love you and respect you and your job.
All the best,
Mari

I was JUST having the "respect" conversation with my daughter, then opened this. I guess respect is just a good thing all around!

Sorry this happened to you. I think people assume that since a blog is open to anyone to read, it makes everything posted on it as being available to everyone too. I'm hoping that the guilty party reads all of these comments too! Have a great day!

I hope that it was done out of ignorance rather than plagiarism. But this is a great topic as well...hopefully no one will copy and paste IT. lol And thanks for the link to Google alerts. Unfortunately I'm finding people that are using my same name in other areas...I did an extensive search before I chose my name..sigh.

I too am sorry this happened to you. I look forward to your blog each time you send it. You are one of my 3 favorites I posted on Twitter and quiltermag yesterday.
It is sad others are so small that they steel from others. I don't blog and appreciate others that do. Hope the deed turns around to bite them. Just know so many of us care about you.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T! I am totally with you. My mum always use to say "If you don't have anything good to say you shouldn't say anything at all". I think it would be wise to transform that phrase to "If you don't have you own words/patterns/or whatever unique for you and only you to share, don't share at all." Customized for blogland that sometimes can be a really nasty place. Thanks for sharing the Google Alert thing.

It would have been just as easy to open the message board by saying something about ripping vs cutting and then providing a link to your post about it, giving credit where credit is due. What are people thinking? They're not thinking I suppose, and that's the problem.

Now off to check into google alerts! I've found my pictures and videos on other people's sites without credit or permission a few times, and it's quite unnerving. I'm sorry this happened to you.

I'm sorry this happened to you and commend you for writing this post. I don't have a blog and am a novice quilter. I learn so much from those of you who take the time to share your knowledge. You have integrity, Rachel. Thank you for all you do. You were my first blog and I will be forever attached and am always waiting for a new post that is genuine you.

Seems the last few weeks have been very disrespectful weeks in quilting blogland. Your blog is great and I am sorry this happened to you.

Well, Rachel, on your suggestion I just set my 'google alerts'.
Great feature from Google.

Love your blog.

Good for you!! I am glad to it was deleted too.(just checked that alert thingee)

I sometimes hear about ebay folk selling blog tutorial posts for this and that sewing project! A couple of months ago on blogspot, I was able to stop allowing pictures to be copied via "right clicking". It made me feel a little bit better.

Thanks for taking the time to talk about this so nicely. I know when I first started blogging I really knew nothing about blog etiquette. I'm still learning. I hope that this incident was an example of that.

BTW - I'm finally trying your postage stamp quilt. Hope to have one to share soon! :-) Love how much you share and the style that you show when you share.

Dear Mz Rachel ... I'm truly sorry this has happened to you and your blog. This does seem to be a bad week for blogland and respect ... seriously what's up, folks? Thank you for your very classy post and the tip on the alert. Respectfully, a dedicated blog fan.

Yikes that does suck! I read from anoother blogger that you whole blog can be copied with out you even knowing it and they can do what ever they want to it. So the suggestion was to page break so it makes it harder to steal what you write.
I used to play a online game and had my entire account hacked. It was no fun getting everything back so I feel the pain! It felt like some one violated ya and there is not much you can do but fight back and put stricter security on your account. Which for bloggong really does suck for you because it is the whole reason why you are here to blog is to share with others you creative outlet.
I would suggest to move you Play Nice. Ask First. higher on your page. Cause honestly majority of people who read do not scroll to the bottom of the page. They just read what is right in front of them and that is it.
Matter of fact some people are just tards and do not even bother reading. Some people look at only the pictures. And some people just do not care wheather they rail road you or not.

I may be a name dropper but at least I give creadit where credit is due.

It just goes to show that: "Thems there has no edgeamacation!"

So here is my question for any one to answer.

How do you copy write your blog and pictures?

Also how do you get your own (dot).com for your own blog?

Thanks Rachel for the Google tip and sorry that some one had to be a tard.
Take care now!

Your blog is amazing and so are you. I wonder at what point women just grow up and stop playing high school games with others lives. I've been on the receiving end of some of that stuff lately, and it makes my jaw drop!

You have a great blog, a wonderful family and we can't imagine the web without you!

yikes..that's horrible. Did the forum take down the thread?

I understand why it would bother you. I did see the post and she did credit your blog and left a link to it, but she should have just posted the link or maybe the link and a line or two. Not the whole post. At any rate it looks like it's been removed. The fact that she was just opening up a discussion, not even related to your blog post other than the subject matter, really makes me wonder why she didn't just post rip vs cut, what do you prefer and leave it at that.

Chef Mama Lori said...

Sorry this happened Rachel. Did she give you credit for the post, at least, & point folks here?

I've learned so much about what's okay & what's not in the blog world/art world just in the past few years. I'm hoping maybe she was just an uneducated blogger like me who really didn't the rules. We can hope!

I have only in the past several months learned about not sharing pictures when they are online. I'm glad you're posting this stuff so maybe others can learn the rules of the blogging road.

Thanks, too, for the info on Google Alert. I had no idea it existed!

I love reading blogs, I enjoying following links and more than often see a lot of the same information, same quilt block with a different angle. I also read a lot of the same complaints/rants with different angles.
From what I am reading you did get credit. She cut and pasted your topic. Was it really that bad. You didn't invent the topic, you started a conversation, a conversation that I am sure a lot of people could have responded to with a "oh we were just discussing that the other day". No one on a blog has invented sewing/ crafting /quilting - somewhere someone has already made something simular. As a chef do I get upset everytime I see something that I have created being done by someone else, or better yet a simular recipe in a magazine/blog? No it's a compliment and I didn't invent cooking either.
I noticed you removed and didn't respond to the person who accused you of copying and publishing a quilt. Why didn't you address that person?

rachel griffith said...

to "lisa"...

first: i deleted the previous comment because it was a false accusation. yeah i get that amandajean's ragged squares quilt and my scruffily quilt are very similar. i'd like to make you aware of the fact that amandajean & i are friends and we are well aware of each others designs. so the truth is that the comment that called me out to be a thief, didn't sit well with me, so i deleted it. considering this is my blog, i think it's okay that i did so. also i didn't address her comment because it seems that anytime someone has something negative to say, they feel the need to not have contact info attached to them. {much like your comment.}

secondly: while the copy & paste thing did say "ps i quilt" and it was linked to my post, it was still in breech of copyright. i never once said that i invited the topic of ripping vs cutting. i simply just opened it up for discussion on my blog. {keyword: MY BLOG.} i'd also like to point out that since friday, i have been in contact with the lady that did the copying & pasting...her & i are completely fine with one another.

so i'm not sure why you decided to leave such a neagtive comment "lisa" but i have addressed both you & the previous deleted comment.

Lissa said...

this is so interesting...I have been following several (too many) quilting blogs for over a year now and never have seen a post addressing such things and now in one week two post having to ask their followers to be respectful. The other was regarding mean comments left for the blogger, not copying, but still negative toward them! It bums me a bunch, because I thought this little world I partake in daily seems so positive and happy that it is too bad that people have to ruin it. I guess I just don't understand others and their lack of thought in things they do and say. I guess it is good they have tools for you to monitor where your stuff is put on the internet! (you are always teaching me new stuff, this time about blogging). Anyway, sorry about the situation! Hopefully that person learned a little life lesson!

Oh no Rachel.
My heart nearly stopped when I read this post. Please help me understand something. I am fearful that I may have done something similar to what was done to you, on more than one occasion, and that scares me to death. I have followed a number of tutorials available on line and in the desire to give the individual credit, for the creation, I post my completed project, their name and blog link as well as a picture they may have posted. I always give them credit, but it never dawned on me that I should not have pasted their image to my post. Please get back with me soon on this. If I am at fault, I really need to get busy going back through my blog (cleaning it out) as well as send some "sorry" emails for infringing on their photos. I feel so bad about this!!
Sincerely, Trish

I agree that it is a copyright violation, but I also am surprised at how worked up everyone is over something that probably was not malicious. I hope everyone is equally outraged when bloggers (not you!) paste entire recipes from published cookbooks into their posts. I know that's a bit off-topic, but it happens a lot and no one blinks an eye, even though that is content you'd otherwise have to pay for.
