just one star can comfort a solider.
i've joined moda in their challange.
a challenge that is close to my heart.
moda's challenge is to piece, quilt & bind 100 quilts in 100 days for soliders.
and they need 1800 star blocks to reach this goal.
what does this have to do with you?!?!
well yall can help make these quilts come to life.
here's what you do...
make a star block.
sign it.
send it to moda.
easy peasy.
{fabric requirements, block pattern & mailing address HERE.}
it takes just a few minutes to whip up this star block.
a few minutes & a few scraps to make a serviceman smile.
the semper fi fund will help coordinate the donations of the 100 quilts.
it's such a great organization...and i'm not just saying that.
go read what they do.
it really touches the heart.
most of yall know that my hubby is a marine.
you can't say was a marine to a marine. it's doesn't bode well.
it's that whole "once a marine, always a marine" thing.
the corp is how we met & fell in love and i just flat out love the marine corp.
end. of. story.
all marines are like family to other marines. <--semper fidelis to the "t"
it's a honor that is well deserved.
and something to be very, very proud of.
so let's help my family.
let's comfort them with quilts!!!
we can make a difference.
♥
so who's with me?!?!
who's gonna make just one star for our boys?!?!
you?!?! your quilt guild?!?! a gal down the street that you're teaching to quilt?!?!
here's my challenge on top of moda's challenge...let's jump start just one star!!!
let's see how many of yall can make your block THIS WEEK!!!
make your block, take a pic & send it to me. {via email or flickr link}
let's do this by next monday.
i'm talking blocks en route to texas by monday.
i'm going to send one lucky peep a special "thank you" package. <--a goooood one!!! promise.
semper fi yall :D

I love your photo with the ring....I finished my block and need to get to the post office tomorrow...this is such a great project!
Great cause! I'll be making mine tonight after kiddos are in bed. I am also passing this along to friends. Love your blog :-)
I'll make one too. Thanks for passing along the info.
Thank you Rachel ... my sister 'is' a Marine also. Consider my star made and sent. Bless you and your Marine family!
I'm in! My dad was a Navy & Air Force man! This is such a wonderful project! :)
I'm an Army brat. :-) I just happened to finish cutting out enough for 20 blocks this morning (yeah, I get carried away...). Not sure I'll get them all done by Monday, but I'm going to try!
Count me in!
Such a beautiful picture! Not gonna lie, it made me a little weepy. I love this project, and already have my fabrics picked out!
I'm on it. I was hoping to be able to send more than one. God Bless Marines and the rest of our service men and women, and those they leave behind.
my sister is a marine currently serving in afghanistan. her husband is a marine stationed in corpus christi. i will definitely make two stars.
How can I say no? My older son is an active Marine 6 months into his first enlistment with the Corps. His 22nd birthday is this Wednesday, so I think I'll set aside that day to make this block in his honor.
I'm in. Will do it by Saturday.
I ♥ this idea! I made 2 blocks to send ☺
I'm in! My twin brother just finished 5 years as an active Marine and my dad "is" a Marine as well. I will be making a star in their honor!
Thank you for passing this along. I will share it down at my legion post with the rest of my auxiliary.

proud wife of a
Vietnam Era Navy vet
I am totally "in" for this! My brother~in~law is a retired Navy Seal (Seal Team 3). Thanks for the info!
I'm planning to do this. This post may be just the kick I need to do it NOW!
Great minds think alike. I just posted the "one star" on my blog a few minutes ago and then I go my favorite blogs to read and yours is at the top. Great challenge!
Thanks for posting this; I will pass it along. My youngest son is an active Marine and we are so proud of him. Can't wait to send along my star block.
The only problem with this is that they are going to have WAY MORE than enough blocks! They will be able to make thousands with all the support that we quilters will give!
I'm in... thanks for sharing!
Got home at 6 and read your blog...my star is done and will be in the mail tomorrow- what a great cause!! And a great way to spend my time...♥
Rachel are you in my head or what! I am a CTRS (certified therapeutic recreation specialist) who works with older adults in a daycare. They wanted to do an activity around quilts since Saturday is national quilt day! I saw this call for action last week and decided it might be perfect for us! I pitched it to them today and we are IN!! They are already asking me if I can make enough for a whole quilt for a solider. I even offered to give some fabric from my stash so that they can choose their fabrics to make their stars! I know it may not seem like alot, but for these folks who are already disabled and want to help others, they jumped (some of them literally) at the chance to say thank you even if it is in a small way, and even if it means I may spend all weekend sewing blocks together! I am super excited about it! Hurah! as one of my former military members put it! :-) all smiles!
What a great project!
Semper fi my marine corps sister. I'll do it and spread the word too. Awesome effort.
I saw this on the Moda blog last week, and I made 3 so far and hope to make a few more before heading to the post office on Friday. A sincere THANK YOU to your husband for his service. I am a military spouse also. It's a wonderful thing... PS - Hooah!
I am happy to make one tonight.
Kristin
I'm in for one or more. I've discovered that triangles are not as intimidating as I once thought!
MGM
I'm a Navy Wife, so I am completely on-board with projects that help our troops! Thanks for making this a priority - I'm in!
one star made and 3 more cut and ready to piece!!
I'm sending mine off tomorrow. From one military wife to another, thank your hubby for his service to our country :) I don't say I'm married to an Airman, I just say I'm married to the Air Force, lol!
never made a star block before, but i'm gonna try my first with this one! i'll make two! thanks for letting me know about this opportunity! <3
I beat you to it. I made my star block the first week of the month and mailed it off before I left for vacation. Sorry no picture to offer. It's a great cause. Kathie L in Allentown
I jumped right in and my block was sent off the end of last week. definitely a fun block to make!
Just made mine! I'd been thinking about doing this anyway. Thank you for motivating me with your post!
I'm going to do it! What a great thing! Have forwarded it to other quilter friends too! Thanks for the info!!Ruth Wright
ps...your star is...perfect! How did you get it to line up so perfectly??
I'm so excited about Just One Star. LOVE THIS! Funny how we posted this at the same time - love that. Behold the power of goodness, eh!
PS - Don't forget the girls, too, k! Said she the squid. :o)
I am totally going to try and make more than one!! btw, OOOHHHH RAHHH!! My dad was in the Army, my Gpa in the Navy and I did try for the Marines but was PMR'd (permentaly medically rejected) due to migraines...but I did tutor some guys to pass the ASVAB!! I love the military and all they do for me and my family every day!! Please tell your hubby THANKS and give him a hug from the Jimmerson Family
oh fun! I am in!
What a great idea!
Without you I'd never have known!
I'll make one and send it.
I don't know any Army Service Men (or women) but there is never a better time to start! I will have it made and sent this week *crosses heart* on my honor.
I'm a Marine baby! My dad was in the Marines during Vietnam. And you are correct...once a Marine..always a Marine. I would love to try to do this...I am such a newbie with quilting I'm afraid I will mess it up though :(
I'll make my this week! Thanks for the 'heads up' about this great project!
You got it. One of my "little" brother's childhood friends just deployed to Afghanistan AND a couple weeks later, announced that his wife is expecting their first baby. Quite a timely request!
I've got a beginners class this weekend and I've printed out copies of the pattern for all my students. I think we can have 10 of these done by Saturday afternoon and mailed by Monday for Tennessee!
i found this on another blog yesterday. :) i'll make 2 just cuz i have the extra red. i work in a va hospital, so this is near and dear to me as well.
I'll be honored to make a block
Hey Rachel, I just sent the link to both of the guilds I belong to here in southern Maryland. I'm not sure how many will participate, but it should have just reached another 100 or so quilters inboxes! Some of the girls donate quilts to certain charities, hospice, vetrans home, the childrens and teen quilt project of our local hospital, and different veterans projects. Last year one of the guilds (50 + memebers) dontated a total of 150 quilts! They are prolific...and awesome. Maybe some will also make a block for this worthy event! thanks for letting us know. Blessings :o)
You've probably motivated more folks to do this with your post than anything else! I'll make one this week. Thanks for the boot to get going on it!
I'm glad they are doing this...I remember making stars for the 911 victims.
My dad 'is' a Marine! :) Many years ago, but as you state...once a Marine, always a Marine.
I will be honored to make bunches of stars!
Oh, Rachel, I knew there had to be more we have in common beyond being Southern and quilters! My hubby is an Active Duty Marine, OOO RAH! I'm on this one like white on rice!
count me in. just printed the star info.
Okay ... I'll get started tomorrow after work and it will be on its way to you by Monday (or before).
Pam
I've uploaded my star on your flicker group. It will be in the mail by tomorrow.
I will be making my tonight and shipping them out on Friday. I do want to say THANK YOU! My husband was in Army and injured in Iraq in 2004. He received a donated quilt at Walter Reed Hospital before arrived back to Fort Hood. That quilt gave him so much comfort that he sleeps with it to this day. So, I just want to send out a HUGE THANK YOU TO EACH AND EVERYONE OF YOU!!! God Bless you!
I will be making one or more blocks to send for this good cause. My son is currently serving a tour of duty in Iraq.
I can do that, on it!
Such a great program and I'm thinking they're going to be flooded with quilt blocks! Mine are all cut out and ready to sew this afternoon. Your photo made me cry. Our son is about to head off to Marine boot camp and we're so proud of his choice and incredibly thankful for all of our servicemen who are currently serving and have served in the past.
THANKS FOR MAKING THIS KNOWN!
MY BLOCK WILL BE IN THE MAIL TOMORROW+IT WAS FUN, OF COURSE, I FOUND SOME YUMMY (NO NOT 'YUMMY'!),I MEAN MARINE BLUE WITH STARS IN MY STASH-THINKING IT'LL LOOK GREAT IN THE QUILT!

I'm so in. My husband has been in the Marines for almost 20 years now. What a great way for me to give back to a "family" that has given so much to mine. I'll be making my blocks today.
what a great thing to do.
i will join you and moda!
and thanks to your Hub :)
Great plan and great timing with my spring break just around the corner!
I'm in! Our son is currently in Afghanistan. Please...everyone, please make a block.
made 2 in memory of my father-in-law. thanks! Sending them off tomorrow.
I made and mailed my blocks last Thurs, great pattern for a star too. Youers looked lovely.
I saw this on another blog last week. My 15 yo daughter and I made one each and I popped them in the mail this past Saturday. You are right they are quik and easy. What a great project, I hope and pray they get all the blocks they need and the guys who receive the quilts feel appreciated!!
So I don't know anyone in the army and haven't really had cause to be involved with them much, BUT I know what they do is so important so I'm getting involved!
http://www.flickr.com/photos/littlecreatable/5530832157/
I'm not perfect but I've done the best I can ^_^
Read your note, made a star. My son is in Afghanistan with the 744th Combat Engineers. The bomb squad. Last weekend, the other platoon in his unit hit a mine. Three of his guys were hurt. None killed. Found out on the news, but didn't hear from my boy for several days. Sending my first star, several more in the works. I'll pass this along to my guilds. Thanks, Rachel!
My cousin is a fallen soldier. I will be making stars in his memory. My aunt, his mother, passed this opportunity along to all of the Gold Star mothers (mothers of fallen soldiers) in the state of Utah. A friend of mine also has a cousin who served in Iraq and died. She is going to participate too. What a great project to be a part of.
I saw this last week on my online group and I shared with my Tuesday night quilting ladies last night. We are going to do ours and send them in together. I am an Air Force kid (dad was in for 23 years) and this kind of thing always touches my heart. I never seem to be able to get a whole quilt to donate to QOV so this will allow me to do my part in a small way.
I mailed mine off this past Monday--all 13 of them. For my best friend, her dad, my granddad, all of them vets. You can see some of the photos over on my blog. :) Thanks for helping to spread the word!
Thank you so much for letting me know about this. I made a block yesterday afternoon and I am dropping it in the mail today. The Triangle Modern Quilt Guild is taking up this cause, too, courtesy of another, faster member :)
My block is made and I will send you a pic later today. I am putting it in the mail now! Thanks for putting the word out about this. It is a wonderful and easy way to make a contribution to something sew much bigger than yourself! HUGS!

What a wonderful and worthy effort. I'd join you if it weren't for my deep rooted fear of sewing anything involving triangles. I'm sure these quilts will bring much comfort!
I did it! Happy Birthday to my Marine son. Here are my blocks:
Linkie
As soon as I saw it on Moda I made 2 stars - one for each of our family members currently serving - on in Iraq and the other just finishing 2 tours and now in Korea.
Very easy pattern that I think took 10mins from cutting to finish, anyone can make them. So no excuses ladies/gents.
I'm in!
I just emailed you my block! :)
Just emailed you a picture of my block. I will mail it Monday with the others I will make in the next few days. Thanks for all you do!
Hey there! Its done! I've actually made my very first star! And I'm giving it to those in need! *Sigh* that makes me feel good... Here is the link to my star...

Will get my block(s) made and in the mail. Once a Marine, always a Marine is right. My husband was/is a Marine and still has the same habits. THANK YOU!
Rachel ~ I just sent you my flickr link in an email, but here it is, too:

I just mailed my block this afternoon and my Modern Quilt Guild is going to work on some in the next few weeks--I gave them a challenge to do them before or at our next meeting which is a sew-in. So, after April 9th, I will have more to send from our guild. Here is a link to my Flickr:

yea, I made one for me and one for a friend that is a fan of the Marines and sent them off today! Lizzie
I will make mine tonight and get it in the mail tomorrow! Thanks for the push to get it done- I've been meaning to since I first saw it!

Here's mine:

Thanks for sharing this! I finished my 2 blocks last night and will be mailing them in the morning! This was my first time making a block like this {I was a little intimidated at first} but they turned out pretty good! I'll be e-mailing you a pic! :)
I added my two stars to the flickr group. I've been wanting to make a couple blocks. Thanks for the extra push to get these done.
Our Daughter is in the Army and my Husband and several family members have served also.
I made 8 blocks - I will add a pic to your flickr group as well as email you.
Thnaks for making me aware of this great cause.
Making this block was a challenge for me - my first star block like this. Here's my photo. http://www.flickr.com/photos/48960275@N02/5545277116/
Alas, I don't have the pigma pen to sign it. Live in a rural area so when make a trip to town / the P.O. is open, will be mailing it to Moda. Thanks for the impetus to do this.
Thanks for your post...it inspired me to go ahead and join in. I have a nephew currently serving in the U.S. Airforce in Afghanistan. My block is being mailed tomorrow. I posted about it and will upload a photo to your flickr too.
http://calculatingquilter.blogspot.com/2011/03/just-one-star.html
Thanks for posting this, 1 choice 4 quilting posted about it too. Hopefully lots and lots will. I've done one star and will try to get another one or two done in the next week or two.
http://flic.kr/p/9s5eHC
also posted about it on my blog.
Two blocks on their way from Houston to Dallas! Thanks for alerting us to this great cause. Another fabulous one is Sew Much Comfort, where folks sew adaptive clothing for the wounded to wear instead of those awful hospital gowns! Please check their site out and consider it too. Thanks, Annie
Hi Rachel,
I read your blog every day and admire your talent very much. I was quite moved about the blog for Star Blocks. I expect I am too late to qualify for the "special" but I have made two blocks and they are in the mail today. I couldn't mail them on the week-end as our Post Office sends all mail posted Friday thru Sunday up to Toronto to be sorted and then they come back here where they are sorted before they cross the river to Detroit and onward through the States. We don't have a working camera so I can't email or flicker a photo to you. One is made with
"Make Life" red with white stars on a white background and the other is a navy pin-dot star on white background. Canada has a "Quilts of Valour" program but not as well-known or prolific. I think it's wonderful how much support you have for your troops and I think that everyone should be grateful for their sacrifices. Not that I'm ungrateful for Canadian troops, but I hear they are winding down their envolvement!
(wtf?) Just letting you know how much I appreciate what you are doing. Always giving to others.
Thanks for your kindness. Luba Kale
chris.luba@sympatico.ca
I think this is a great idea. This is the first star block I have ever made. I have enough to make a few more tomorrow night and post them on Wednesday. I chose red because these blocks are from a Canadian. http://www.flickr.com/photos/maureenmate/5549247660/
I did it - but I was in such a hurry I mailed it before I took a pic. I'm just glad to be able to help in this way - I hope we can see some pics of the finished product. Lovely idea Rachel - glad you posted it!
Whoops! I forgot to send you my link- I finished these two up this past weekend and mailed them off on Sunday! :) Thank you for the encouragement and the inspiration with your beautiful quilting!

Thank you for sharing this. Mine will be done this weekend. I've also shared this project with others, so more will be coming!
