i finally made a pillowcase.
yayyy.
every single time i see someone make pillowcases, i'm like, "i should do that."
of course, i never do.
but we legit need more pillowcases in this house.
so, i was motivated and on a mission.
i pulled out one of my favorite prints of all time and gave it a go.
(fabric = odds & ends by julie comstock for moda.)
note to self: hunt for more of this fabric!!!
upon a recommendation, i followed a you tube video to make these.
it was simple enough, but the pillowcases are huge.
like i could fit two pillows in each pillowcase.
OR miss lindsey could use them as sleeping bags.
i'm so not kidding.
note: i changed the trim size. i used a 1 1/2" strip instead of the 2" indicated in the tutorial.
i really love the look of these.
but i think i'm going to buy some new, beefy pillows.
that, or just deal with how big they are.
these are for our bed, as decoration, so i haven't decided yet.
before i commit to a pillowcase making frenzy, what pillowcase tutorial do y'all use?
inquiring minds want to know.
please & thank you.
xo, rachel

I use this tutorial: http://www.quiltersclubofamerica.com/forums/t/7462.aspx
I always make my trim a little smaller, though. I prefer 1.5" - 1.75". The finished pillowcase should measure roughly 20x30". How big did yours turn out?
I used to use just this tutorial http://filminthefridge.com/2010/01/27/pretty-quick-pillowcase-tutorial/ and still use it for the measurements but now sew them a quick way from this tutorial http://patches.typepad.com/notes_from_the_patch/2010/07/tutorial-tuesday-24-pillowcases.html
I used the you tube tutorial from Missouri star quilting company. But yeah, I also had to trim mine down a bit because they were too big at first. Once you start making them, it's hard to stop!! I usually just use quilting weight cotton. I haven't tried using anything else as I live in Los Angeles and flannel pillowcases just seem too hot.

Hi Rachel,
I've used both of these:
They are essentially the same. The one from Strawberry Patch is a bit easier to follow, while I like the dimensions on the Twiddletails one better.

I use the one from kirstencan: PILLOWCASE TUTORIAL except I use a french seam method for the inside seam.
Rachel, I also used the strawberry patch tutorial. Once you get the hang of it, you can make those pillowcases any way you want. I have doubled the accent band length and made a ruffle for my girls and they turned out great. I'm making a set for my mom right now and she is going to get a much wider ruffle similar to the tute on the cottage mama's blog.

Ditto on the twiddletails tutorial

This is super easy to put together, all of the measurements are straightforward and I love the results.
I have tried several tutorials, but Missouri Start Quilt Co. is my fav!
I made pillowcases each of my six grandkids for their Easter Baskets. Everyone loved them. I am making a second set to have at my house for when they come to stay over night. Everyone will have their own pillow waiting for them.
My favorite tutorial is "Making a Sausage Pillowcase with Judy." http://youtu.be/NLnrC9yo8tY
That fabric is great! I always tell myself I'll make pillow cases, too. Especially when I see people make ones to match their quilts. Maybe someday.

I just use the tutorial from allpeoplequilt.com
If mine turn out large(r), I put 2 pillows in one case. That way they stand up really well as a sham. Then when you have company you already have the extra pillows set out!
Watch out; it's addictive.
I use a pillowcase tutorial by Valori Wells. The pattern is on a sewing card I bought from my LQS for about $3.50. Here is a link I found online: http://www.quiltinaday.com/shoponline/patterns_display.asp?i=43135
The pillowcase fits my flat or fluffy pillows perfectly.
I love fluffy pillows, so I've never had one turn out too large. The first time I made one I followed a video tutorial from All People Quilt. Actually, I prefer vintage pillowcases and do not care if they are pairs or singletons. When I make them, I like to piece the "cuffs" to match a quilt.
I have used the: http://www.allpeoplequilt.com/millionpillowcases/instructions/RollItUp.pdf
They are fast, simple, and easy to do. My guild and my daughter's Girl Scout troop teamed up to make some for Pillows of Hope in Cincinnati. The pillow cases will then be given to the children at Cincinnati's Children's Hospital.
I even made some on my own for my daughter http://flic.kr/p/c4vCDw.
Oh, you can find more of the Odds and Ends fabric at Miller's too.
Have a great weekend!
cute! I always mean to make pillowcases too, but never do! too many other projects always going on...
I've used the twiddletails and there is one on allpeoplequilt.com. They are very addicting but so much fun. I love your fabric choice. very cute
I used the video you posted and mine fit my pillows perfectly. Apparently there are different sized pillows--I thought mine were fairly standard but apparently not! I had tried another tutorial posted online that someone had sent me the link to and it was missing some key steps, so I was glad to have the Missouri Star Quilt Company one. I agree with other commenters--they're addicting! I've made several for donations now.
Since I don't use standard pillows, I have learned to measure and make them to fit my pillows.
I use the same tutorial you used. I don't have trouble with them being too big, though. Maybe you just need new pillows. Seriously. Also, don't you have a daughter that's learning to sew? My daughter made a pair of these for her first sewing project. I did the cutting for her, but let her do the sewing. They came out great. Since then she's made some for her friends, and they were very impressed. Great for birthday presents. There's such great, fun fabric out there for kids these days.
I have used Me & My Sister's pillowcase FREE tutorial.

It is easy and very addicting. Have made these in many fun fabrics for my grandsons. They love them!
Go to the million pillowcase challenge. I like using he roll it up.
when I make pillowcases, I use the same measurements and same basic method, but I use a 1/2'' seam on the first seam, then I make a French seam to make it into a pillowcase (wrong sides together with 1/4'' seam, turn, right sides together with 3/8'' seam). I don't remember the tutorial that I used first, but they called it the ''burrito'' method.
You could try getting either queen or king size pillows to put into these cases. We have a king size & a queen size bed plus a body pillow so I end up making a range of sizes to fit the different pillows.

Hi! The first time I saw this method was on Thea Jirak's "Quilt BoM #2"; the explanation for the pillow case starts at 4:20 minutes about of the video.
Best wishes
Hélène
I use this one from All People Quilt, also known as the burrito method: http://www.allpeoplequilt.com/millionpillowcases/instructions/RollItUp.pdf
It is also large but may be a bit smaller depending on the depth of your selvage. I didn't use the 2" piece like Jenny does in the video, but I did add jumbo ric rac to the seam between the case and the cuff after I pulled the tube out and pressed the seam even. I also made French seams to enclose all the loose threads. People seem to love them.
I use the Hot Dog Pillowcase Tutorial. There are several tuts online. The body of the case starts with a 27" length of fabric cut across the width of fabric. I add a cuff that starts as a 9" and gets folded in half, and a trim piece that is cut 2 1/2", folds in half. It ends up finished at about 21x30.
http://yougogirl.typepad.com/you_go_girl/2010/03/crochet-like-crazy.html. I love this one. You don't have to do the crocheted edge. Love the way your pillow can not fallout. Linda gerig
I, too, use the All People Quilt tutorial, though now I'm going to check out some of these others. :)
Enjoy your pillowcase making. Since I started, I've been keeping an eye out for good deals on fabric and picking up enough to make them two at a time--they make great gifts.
I use that Missouri Star tutorial all the time... and they seem to turn out fine! I did just try and make one for a king size pillow that I could have used for a sleeping bag! :-) I ended up re-sewing the bottom seam and trimming if off some! It's a great way to use those fabrics I've had sitting around!

I like the tutorial on you go girl typepad in her side bar for a posh pillow case. There are a few lessons on making it and then crocheting around edge if you want. Linda geig
I use a free pattern from allpeoplequilt.com called Roll It Up. I love this pattern because the pillowcase doesn't have raw edges inside when finished. So it will last longer no matter how often it is washed. I make matching pillowcases using this pattern for every quilt I make. You should try it! When I make a queen-sized or king pillowcase, I just cut my fabric longer than the standard pillowcase that the pattern is designed for. I simply measure my existing king pillowcase to get the exact measurement.
I use the diy dish pattern but it is basically the same pattern. I made pillowcases for everybody for Christmas last year and used them as the bags for their Christmas gifts. I think I will do this every year. :-)
I use the free tutorial n on uTube by allpeoplequilt called one million pillowcase challenge, also is. Free pattern/tutorial at Their website. There is also a tutorial on uTube called pillow cases with hidden seams by Overall
Quilter and on heir website www.overallquilter.com. Both great patterns.
I used the same tutorial as yourself to make my son a Star Wars pillow. I found the same thing as you...it was large. Once i washed it, it was a bit better. I also did french seams on the inside so that took up a little of the extra. I like the tutorial but if I do it again I will size it down a bit.
Yours look great, that is a lovely fabric.
