this week we will focus on our starting materials.
our quilt will be approximately 55" square.

:)

i cheated this time and had my quilt finished before the announcement.
how else would i be able to convey it's yummy scruffily come & get me goodness?!?!
*sigh*

synchronized squares quilt along.

materials needed:
1 print layer cake of your choice
1 bella solids layer cake of your choice

for those inquring minds, i used:
a flurry {by kate spain} layer cake {get yours here.} <--hi kate. xoxo.

i have started a synchronized squares quilt along flickr group.
i can't wait to see everyone's quilts come to life.

I am still an old school quilter, what is a layer cake and why is it so popular?

What is the time frame for this?

I am definitely in. I really loved the last quilt along (postage stamp). The trouble is picking my layer cakes. But I will get that done today!

I'm in and already have a layer cake (not Christmas, but it will work!0 i've been trying to think of what I'd do with it, so this is perfect! Could I use yardage for the solid? I'm trying to de-stash a bit before my move this summer! ;)

Oh yeah! i need some motivation and this will do it, i'm such a slacker. i think i have a layer cake laying around. sure I do if not, time to shop :0

Don't know if I'll be able to quilt along or not, but I just wanted to say that I HATE summer too! Everyone thinks I'm nuts because I love the winter snow. It's nice to know I'm not alone!
Cute quilt!

Don't have any layer cakes. Will charm packs work?

I just bought my layer cakes! And this time, I am going to keep up... I really am.

Just finished my postage stamp quilt the other day, so I'm ready for another fun quilt along! I would love to use up some of my stash though, instead of purchasing new and I do not have a layer cake. Would charms or jelly rolls work? Or fat quarters?

I'm with you on the summer thing...one day of hot weather and I'm ready for fall!

I am going to finally baste my postage stamp quilt tomorrow I think, so this will be good timing! Will charm squares work for this? I also really do not like summer. Can't say I hate it, but I'd rather have fall or spring anytime. The heat (anything above 70) makes me feel like 'you-know-what'! I'd rather have perfect 60 degree weather and not be cold or hot! And not have to mow the darn lawn! LOL

I haven't even started the postage stamp quilt a long yet. Yeesh. I love this one though! I just takes WEEKS to get stuff in the mail here and now the postal service is on strike. Booooooooo.

You cannot stand Summer? You must live someplace warm. Tell you what, come live in Edmonton Alberta Canada for even just one year. You will be so fricken sick of winter you will never diss summer again! Its June 8th today and its still not nice outside here. I have to cover the garden every night to prevent the frost from killing the plants! Dislike Summer? Not me, heck, I just wish it would hurry it up and get here!!
Cheers,
Carolyn

I love this! I'd love to join in. I've got some FQ's and a charm pack that need a good project like this one! Can I use those instead?

How does a quilt along work? Why do I need a button? (yep, you can tell I'm new to this....)

I have a ton of fat quarters that need to be used up. Can I use those?

I'm not a big fan of summer either, so my quilt will be Christmas-y too!

I am not a big fan of summer either! I like cool fall/spring days when I can be outside without being miserable.
I would love to do this quilt a long and have a bunch of half yards I am using for another project. What are the dimensions of the squares so I know if I will have enough left over from the other project.

Well it sounds fun and I love your quilt. Question though---is this pattern going to be easy enough for a beginner? And by "beginner" I mean someone who finished one quilt in 7th grade and is only part way through a second?

I'm in and super excited! I have a layer cake I have been saving for something special and I think this is perfect!!! Can't wait to get going...

Cute quilt! I'll be looking for answers to all the questions others have asked...charm packs, fat quarters, yardage and time frame.
I am not a summer lover either! I didn't know there were others out there at all. I like the first day of summer because it is all down hill after that! Days get shorter and we are headed to fall!

Sharon said...

I'd love to do this too!!

Karen said...

Cool quilt! I have a layer cake to use, but was wondering if you could post estimates for yardage for the solid so not limited to neutral pre-cuts.

Carol said...

Cute quilt. I love your quilt alongs, I did the postage stamp quilt. I'm in total agreement with you on summer, don't care for summer and can hardly wait till Fall. I ordered up my layer cakes.

I have to think about this one - I just joined a kaleidoscope quilt-along - although this one looks lovely and effective and much much easier!

I think I might, though - your last quilt-along was fun and simple and very effective!

I have a charm pack so thinking I could make a mini one in half scale.

Do you use the whole white layer cake or is there a fair amount left over? Just wondering if I have enough red left over to use instead or if I'd need to get more...

Mouster1 said...

I would love to join in, but I'm in the middle of moving. When will you be starting and can I get instructions and perhaps start in a few weeks? Thanks for having the quilt along. It's a great way for quilters to have fun and see other fabrics in the same pattern and how amazing they all look.

I'd love to play, but between the end of school, Solstice, my daughter's birthday, a graduation party, two baby quilts, a shirt for my husband, a farm grand opening, the beginning of strawberry season, and probably a few other things I'm forgetting just now, I think I'm booked solid for the rest of the month. I'll watch everyone in the flickr group and sigh longingly, though!

Joining in, as my Postage Stamp Quilt should be ready for binding this week...and I love it so much! But a question: as the new Riley Blake layer cakes have less squares, what is the actual count needed of the printed layer cake squares?

We packed and sold the house this spring and I had NO sewing time last couple of months!!!!! We are finally settling in at our new location, I see fewer and fewer boxes to unpack. This would be a great way to start up again! I'm in :)

I'm in! Just ordered Summer House & Just Wing It from Fat Quarter Shop. It's not like I needed to order any because I have some Giddy, Sunkissed, Bliss & Origin layer cakes at home but I wanted something new. Lol!

Once I get them and decide which one I'm going to use I'll go to my LQS for the yardage. Now all I need to do is piece the backing for my postage stamp quilt and quilt it.

Amy Sp said...

Does "finished" mean just the top, or quilted and bound too?
Thanks!

I am new to blogging and quilting and would love to "grab a button", how do I do that? Do I just drag it into my blog or is there something more to it?

Anita said...

I'm ready...using "Grace" by 3 Sisters LC, with "natural" for the solid. Have I missed the rest of the instructions? Can't seem to find it on the site. Well, I'll keep looking. Love how the quilt looks finished.

Rachel - I want to say thank you at this late date! I actually made my blocks last summer when the quilt along started, but did not get them sewn together until Sept, then to my longarmer. The quilt finally told me last week that it wanted to go to my Mom - and believe me I had been all over the place with where this quilt belonged over the last six months! - Mom was never in the running. Easy? Raw edges? Pieced binding? Quilted by someone else? To my Mom? Never! But last week I knew it was the perfect quilt for my 81 year old mom to get a scruffy hug from me through out the season, even though I am 300 miles away. My mom absolutely loves it and thinks it is perfect for the entire winter, lol!
Thanks so much Rachel for this quilt along, I never expected the outcome that occurred for this quilt, but I am so grateful your sharing gave me one more way to hug my mom.
