pinwheel sampler quilt along: block two.

27 February 2010

pinwheel sampler quilt along.

yayyy!!!
here are the instructions for block two!!!

we HAD to have the pinwheel block that started it all.
:)

002

yall will need:
one 6 7/8" x 6 7/8" square of focal print fabric {mine=red/yellow floral}
one 6 7/8" x 6 7/8" square of secondary print fabric {mine=yellow}
two 6 7/8" x 6 7/8" squares of solid fabric {mine=cream}

015

using my hst tutorial, use your 6 7/8" squares to make 4 hst blocks.

this is our block layout.
easiest pinwheel block EVER.

019

sew row one together, pressing seams to the right.
sew row two together, pressing seams to the left.
{this will ensure perfect seams.}

029

sew you two rows together to construct your block.
cute huh???

022

to tackle those pesky bulky seams...
with your block folded in half, seam rip the first 2 or 3 stitches.
{as pictured.}
do this for both sides of the fold.

042

your seams are open, now finger press them in opposite directions.
it'll look somewhat like a mini 4-patch block.

045

now make one more block in a completely different color scale.

my advice:
i choose fabrics that were the same hue or really coordinated well.
play with your fabric placements before you commit to cutting.
although it's a ubber simplistic block, it makes a strong statement.

so that's 4 blocks down. 12 to go.
& next week we are gonna do one of my fav pinwheel blocks.

i can't wait to start seeing all of yall's blocks show up in our flickr pool.
last weeks blocks are looking great!!!

{pdf version of this tutorial can be found here.}

Pin It!

Of course I have been stalking the site and have my fabrics picked out and ready! Looks like I know what I'm doing with my Saturday night...and I wouldn't have it any other way.

a simple pinwheel, but my favorite! (well I shouldn't say that yet b/c I'm sure you'll be putting some pretty great ones here for us to make that I've never seen or done!)

How great it would be to participate...but definitively now time yet. Nope!
It is still fun to follow your making thought, and perhaps one day ...;)

I bought some fabric online today to join — better late than never, right?

I was wondering, will the quilt use the entire layer cake? I got a fat quarter bundle with 18 FQ prints. Will that be enough for all the blocks, or should I get a few extras FQs?

Okay, I get that it is totally weird to love a quiltalong but I really do love this. I love the fabric I am using, I love pinwheels (who knew you could love pinwheels) and your tutorials are great. This is a ton of fun. You are super great to put this all together - thanksthanksthanks.

Uber has one b, it's a German word, and uses an Umlaut (those two little dots above the letter)for pronunciation. If we don't have the Umlaut, you can use ue instead. The English/American use of the word usually uses a hyphen to attach it to the word it describes, as it is part of the formation of compound words in German.

Been wanting to learn how to quilt for so long, but could not find adequate instructions - or the nerve - until now!! Thank you so much!

I've had no electricity for 5 days, and the first thing I did once it came back on was to make these pinwheels. Thanks for the treat! Now, back to the laundry.

Just made these last night! I made them before Block 1, because they seemed like the simplest, but I'm anxious to get back to Block 1 now! I uploaded to the pool too!
