my first quilt.

11 July 2009

so because i adore camille, i'll shame humor myself for a brief moment.
here is my contribution for the parade of quilts...

i know it's not a quilt...but here's the 1st blanket i ever made.
i made this at the ripe ol' age of 16.
i credit this blanket for the fabric loving person i am today.
{you can read more about this blanket HERE.}

and this...*sigh*...is the 1st quilt i ever made.
i made this at the ripe ol' age of 21.
well actually this quilt was started in 2004 and it still needs binding.
me & this quilt have a strong love/hate relationship.
{you can read more about this quilt HERE.}

and here is my most recent quilt.
so recent that it debuted on the moda bake shop yesterday!!!
{direct link HERE.}

i ♥ this quilt. ALOT.
so much so that i don't even want to put it away until christmas.
tehehe.

it's fun to see a mini evolution of my quilts.
{& to think of the ones that were created in between these three.}

so the big million dollar question is this:
what have i learned since the very beginning???

#1 the rotary cutter is a girl's best friend.
#2 iffy fabric when bought, will still be iffy when it's in your finished quilt.
and #3...
never ever forget that you set your dr. pepper next to where you are quilting.
bad ju ju. promise.

Pin It!

Bought two charms in Figgy Pudding this am to make this last quilt of yours. I hope to get all the pieces cut and put together next weekend at my retreat...

I will have to add one charm from my stash as they only come with 40 charms in the pack, but I might be able to find something to match...

I didn't even think of posting the first blanket I made. I used to tie them on mom's quilt frames when I lived at home and I still tie (with yarn) them when I give a picnic quilt away. My first one on my own was horrible! We used it as a moving blanket to cover furniture for many years. It finally gave up the ghost after about 26 years of marriage bz I threw it away last year and I've been married 27 years! Hey, I got an A on it in home ec though so I guess it wasn't all bad!

well look who decided to join the party... :-P after reading about your blanket.. i realized that i kinda made a quilt (well 2) before my first quilt.. but i don't know if it counts... it was before i knew how to sew and i cut the fabric out... 12" squares i think.. and layed it all out on the floor... and my mom did all the sewing... and then just sewed it onto an existing cream comforter... so does that count?... hmm... and why isn't that first quilt bound yet?.. seriously i thought this was binding weekend!! get to it!!

Nice evolution! I don't have any pictures of my first quilts. It would be obvious that my tastes have changed as well! Plus, how awesome are the fabrics that are available now? The quilting cottons have come a long way, baby!

It is fun to see the evolution of things - I made my first quilt in 1994 - it hangs proudly on my wall - in all of it's crappy fabric splendor:) It was my first - so it's special:) Thank you for reminding me about #3!!

Awe that's cute your first blanket....if you ever want to get that table topper off your hands I know of a good home where it will be loved. :) Oh and I've totally done the Dr. Pepper spilled next to my sewing machine thing...many times. You think I'd learn..nope.

Thanks Rachel for the honest and amusing story accompanied by photos of your quilting journey! Now I can sympathize about first quilts, but you were much younger! I love your most recent + gotta' get some fabric to make one.

It is amazing to see the evolution of quilting. I remember the 1 quilt I made I hand tied, and the 2nd was machine stitched...it didn't take me long to realize how much of a hassle tying all those stupid strings can be. At the time my mother didn't even realize anyone did anything other than tying off quilts.

I saw your Christmas table covering and tutorial and love it. I can't wait to get all my greens and reds out. :) It was a great tutorial!

I love your most recent quilt. Saw it on the MBS and was fascinated by the pattern. Sadly, Christmas will be here sooner than you think so you won't have too long to wait to use it! :)
