pumpkin wall quilt tutorial.

09 September 2008

well my secret is out!!!
i was working on a pumpkin wall quilt tutorial.
i really hope yall enjoy it.
if you have any questions, feel free to ask.
{because it's my 1st time doing a tut.}
and of course show & tell if you make one!!!

materials:
cream fabric
dark drown fabric
green fabric
orange fabric
purple fabric
pumpkin print fabric
lightweight fusible web
coordinating threads
batting
backing
cutting:
from cream:
cut four 1 ½ inch squares
cut two 2 ½ x 4 ¼ inch rectangles

from dark brown:
cut one 2 ½ inch square

from orange:
cut one 8 ½ x 10 ½ inch rectangle

from purple:
cut four 1 ½ x 14 inch strips for inner border

from pumpkin print:
cut four 3 ½ x 22 inch strips for outer border

from green:
cut one leaf shape

for binding:
cut two 2 ½ x 36 strips

21 x 21 backing
20 x 20 batting

for appliquéd leaf:
lay fusible web; paper side up, over your leaf pattern.
use pencil to trace pattern.
cut out leaf shape roughly ¼ inch outside traced lines.
press fusible web leaves on wrong side of green print; let cool.
cut out fabric leaf.
peel off paper backing.

directions:
mark diagonal line on wrong side of each cream ½ inch square.

align a marked cream square with one corner of orange 8 ½ x 10 ½ rectangle. sew on drawn line, then trim excess, leaving an ¼ inch seam allowance. press attached triangle open, pressing seam allowance toward orange triangle.

repeat step 2 to add marked cream squares to remaining corners of rectangle to make a pumpkin section.

sew cream 2 ½ x 4 ½ rectangles to opposite edges of a dark brown 2 ½ inch square to make a stem section. press seams toward cream fabrics.

sew together a stem section and a pumpkin section to make a pumpkin block. press seam toward stem section. the block should be a 10 ½ inch square, including seam allowances.

position green leaf on pumpkin block, fuse in place.
using matching thread, machine stitch around the leaf. {feel free to hand stitch…i did.}

sew inner border strips to opposite edges of block.
add inner border strips to remaining edges.
press seams toward inner border.

sew pumpkin print border strips to opposite edges of block. add outer border strips to remaining edges. press seams toward outer border.

layer quilt top, batting & backing; baste. quilt as desired.

i wanted to enhance the pumpkin with stitching to mimic a pumpkin’s grooves, leaf veins & trendil details.

bind. and take a look at your brand new pumpkin wall quilt.

this wall quilt was inspired completely by this quilt.

it's completed measurement is approximately 18 x 18. it was VERY simple to make.
did i mention it only takes an afternoon to make???

enjoy.

p.s. there's only 13 days until my 26th birthday!!!
{and momma will be here in '14 and a wake up'}

is there an errror at cutting, it says to cut 2 1/2 X 4 1/4 inch rectangle for the cream print, but for it to come out correctly it needs to be 4 1/2 not 4 1/4. i was only preparing for the project haven't started yet. has anyone made it yet and know if i am correct? i am a new quilter and sometimes forget to take things in account, but i remembered all my seam allowances...i think.
